Had one at the last shuttle launch
The guy next door to me on the causeway was there with his son who was shooting with a mid-range Nikon with a short lens (im guessing the kit lens) and im sitting with my 400d with the sigma 70-300 on it with hood.

The guy turns round to his son and says - make sure you keep it on Auto for the launch cause its the only way to get good photos!

I wonder if he got anything more than a trail of smoke (my lens was way too short so i dont know what he expected to get!)

If "Auto" is the only way to get good photos I wonder just how some excellent photos were taken before 'Auto' was born.

When I asked my parents for a lens this past Christmas, they asked how much it was (the 50mm f/1.4) and when I told them, their response was "Well, why don't we just buy you another camera? You could probably get another one for that much money." Meaning like a point and shoot... they don't get it.

I dont know what all those 'other' settings are for on the camera if there is auto?

I screwed all my shots up today shooting in 'M' doh, I'm an idiot. :(

At universal studios last month a guy with an entry level nikon asked me "is that a 400mm lens?", I had the 24-70L on. When I told him the FL, he had a baffled look on his face.

You know I just kept my mouth shut around other photographers until I became a member here and read up on stuff a few years ago... to avoid being quoted in a thread like this.

The 24-70 is probably the most misinterpreted lens there is. Especially when the hood is on it. It looks so ginormous. I can understand how those who don't know better would assume it's a long range telephoto lens.

Well actually, they weren't sure if it was a fox or not, they wanted me to look through my "giant" lens to see if it actually WAS a fox....I had my 70-200 in my backpack, wonder what they would have asked if I had that lens mounted? "Can you see the moon with that?"

Today Nicksan was sporting that huge white monster 200 f2. He was accosted at least a dozen times or more by passersby wanting to know it's power, it's name, whether it gives a massage, etc., to the point he exclaimed:

On Dasher, on Prancer -- err, I mean, he said "I'm selling this. I can't take the idiocy, imbecility and insanity any longer."

Only joking. He wouldn't know such words if Merriam Webster slapped him over his big head.

Not so ridiculous, and not specifically about a lens but...

I was at the dance studio tonight getting some shots of the advanced tumbling routine practice when the owner decides to announce that I'm their to take pictures for an article the local paper is running.

Apparently they didn't care for any of the ones that came out of her P&S when she sent them...

hahahaha yeah, I think I only made a couple of 'ridiculous' comments about SLR's before I found POTN and read enough to not make an id10t of myself. hahaha I think the worst I did was when I walked into a 'camera' store (Ritz) and asked what 'DSLR' stood for. LOL! (That was before POTN!) the next time I went in there... well let's just say that the tables had turned, and they could have learned a bit by asking me a few questions. :(

ok. back to comments... I was on vacation this last week, and I got a few.

How do I get this flash to work? ~ from a mom that was trying to shoot sports at night she had a 20D + 70-300 (what is that an F4?) the flash she was using was borrowed from someone who didn't shoot canon, and it wasn't working... even in manual. I was unable to get it to work :( I told her she needed to get a 580EX hahaha.

Hey Take my Picture ~ from some random guy that was playing during the same game as above. I hit the FEL button a couple of times, and he went on his happy way.

That thing looks Heavy! I couldn't stand to shoot something that heavy. ~ from a guy that was shooting a smaller P&S, I had my 40D + BGE2n + 70-200 2.8 + 580EXII (so it was a little heavy... but I've gotten used to it)

Are you the 'official' photographer? ~ from 10+ people during the week

What Camera is that? ~ from at least 8 people

I didn't get as many comments as I expected... but that is perfectly fine with me! I wouldn't mind having a cloaking device for when I am shooting, especially an event where I have to get up near the front in front of people, cause I feel that I am distracting, and that the people are watching me instead of the concert or whatever. LOL
