Couple of years back, I bought an old Quantaray 500mm on ebay for like $30. I went to a local park to test it out. A guy walking past me goes, "woah, are you trying to take down a plane?". Please note that I am "brown" (from India). I should have pointred it at him and asked him to do a dance.

Went to see my dentist today for a checkup. Had my 70-200 f4 and 400d with 430ex. After he noticed it:

Dentist: "Ah so you're a professional photographer?"
Me: "Not yet, I'm kinda moving up the ladder one step at a time."
Dentist: "Well that's a nice lens you've got on there. You do nature photography?"
Me: "Nah, this and that really..."
Him *laughs* "I bet the zoom could reach Scotland!"

lol.

Not really a comment but I also got quite an angry look from an elderly gentleman sitting on a bench. Everyone else on the bench/seating area also stopped and eyed my gear but this one guy kept eye contact with me for ages, with a really nasty stare.

Meh, some people cant be helped ;/

LOL I too would bet that lens could reach Scotland! the fastest would likely to hop a plane to get it there. LOL

peoples expressions when they see a lot of camera gear is indeed interesting! LOL I've seen some funny ones.

I think you should try and see if it can reach Scotland. I will return it after the test of course (well maybe after a short while testing it myself of course!

Before I destroyed my 17-40 on a field ex, I'd set the FL to 17mm and get up close and personal with people. Whenever someone decided to speak up about it, the comment I usually got went along the lines of:

"Woah, you trying to get a picture of my pores?"

"f/8, Tri-X, and be there."
"Fate, tricks, and be there."

I was at a 70th bd party for one of my aunts, I had my gripped XTI and my 70-200 out and one of the guests came by and said "Now thats a real camera, and I thought I was doing well today when I went and bought my $400 P&S".
Later her husband came by and inquired as to how much I had invested in my gear..I guess he wanted a comparsion to what he had just spent...;)

My first time out with my EF 70-300mm I had a guy come up to me asking what I was shooting, what for, and that its a beautiful day ;)

I also have heard:

"See that lens over there (talking to friend), its like the one I have at home for zoom!"
"Look at that!"

Not too much funny stuff, yet...

wow, thanks for that. I was told that as of last year it was ruled as illegal.

Still, the police and coastguards don't like you doing it :)

Have you heard of the term "photo slut"?

Seriously, how many of you have heard that?

Well, a photo slut is a professional surfer who doesn't compete for his salary, but literally travels the world (getting paid six figures) and only has to wear a few different items of clothing here and there and get in the magazines.

It's the easiest job there is.

So, on the topic of long lenses, when I was growing up in Southern California, if somebody showed up at the beach with a long lens, we all tried to surf in front of him, hoping that we'd get in a magazine, get sponsored, and then become photo sluts.

Of course, most photo sluts are former competitive pro surfers who are retired and are now paid by clothing manufacturers to simply travel the world, surf, and get in the magazines.

A big white lens to surfers was like chum to sharks. It set off a frenzy.

What a life.

Thank you. bw!

I smell a "Diva Ducky" shoot. A bowl of all-green M&Ms upended because of a stray brown one, Dasani bottles hurled at heads because the rider called for Evian...

You smelled right... although when I was at the store buying 1 color M&M's I forgot you mentioned green... oh well. But I did have a bottle of Dasani!

this thread is great!

havn't had many comments, except from the " yeah but my camera has more megapixels" comment from my friends.

I havn't shot much really but i really enjoy when you're composing for a shot people make an effort to get out of your way, from what i have seen because you have a (D)SLR. but they make no effort to get out of the way for people with P&s!!
Makes me laugh :D
