I can definitely say that I use my equipment but this one photographer I know abuses the crap out it. He broke a 400 2.8 and two mkIII's in a two week span and didn't care. He's making bank though. I've seen him setup mkII remote camera's in places where it's basically a one time use placement. I always ask him, "what are you gonna destroy today?". What makes it interesting is the fact that he doesn't have camera insurance.

After the first dozen or two claims he probably couldn't find a company that would issue him a policy.

Well it finally happened...

At a parade today (I was at two) a guy came up behind me and asked:

"Are those going to be in the paper?"

Nope.

Next time just tell him, "Yep, the USA Today," and see what he says.

Thats easy...

"They're still in business?"

Funny thing is I have had some (5-6) pics in the local newspapers, but I was at the parade just for fun.

Not to get off topic, but how do you go about submitting pics for the paper...or rather, how did the pics end up in the paper? I've been curious about that for a bit now.

Well... yes and no. He can still get insurance, but it's cheaper to just get "disposable" camera's instead. :p Considering if he gets the shot, he could easily make 5-6 figures.

Everything I've had published has been because of a local dance studio. The paper does a feature article and the studio owner supplies one or more of my pictures.

She compensates me for them and I get photo credit, although once or twice the paper has missed it. Not a huge deal since she credits me for all the performance photos and links my SmugMug site on her studio site.

She has even used a couple of my shots in print advertising. :D

Of course, I always think of a 1DsIII when I think "disposable" camera.

Not a ridiculous comment, but I had my 70-200 attached yesterday and a guy with a Nikon D5000 and kit lens nearly broke his neck staring at it while walking by

It sounds like your acquaintance should invest in some very good custom made camera enclosures, you know the bullet proof kind.

+1, then he wouldn't be able to get car/house insurance reasonably and it would all go crap....

 You say what, mkIV disposables!?
My gear is well used, not bad, I know a wedding photog who doesn't *break* anything, just has slightly scratched up FEs and chewed up bodies (and loses a 5D2+24-70 for a bit of a reception )

That is EXACTLY why I carry my camera everywhere.

I don't always have my camera with me, but I was glad I did Friday night. I saw lightning in the distance, and just kept driving until I got to the beach, where I got this shot:

I've already sold one or two prints, too. :)

That's an amazing shot, but what comments did you get when you were shooting it? :)

Thanks!

I kept to myself, on the dark beach boardwalk a half hour after the park had closed. I was just glad to not get a comment from a police officer telling me to go home or that my car was being towed. ;)
