I was at Disneyland yesterday at Santa's cabin and when it was our turn my kids we up to pose with Santa and I walked towards the Disney photographer and he saw my 40D, w/grip, 24-70, & 580EXii and said "Whoa you don't need me, I'm getting out of your way."

Then he offered to take my picture with the kids so I handed him my camera and said he wasn't sure if he could handle it. Then after he was done he said "Here's your camera sir" trying to hand me the Nikon with the kit lens that was hanging around his neck. Someone in line said it was camera envy.

I had a similar experience at Disneyworld. I had my MkIIn w/ 24-105 when we saw Woody and Jesse from Toy Story. It's one of my kids' favorite movies (shhhh, one of mine too;)). Anyway, when it was their turn, I stepped up and snapped a few shots of them. The DW girl looked at my camera and then hers and then stepped back. As I walked past, she grinned and said, "Trade ya. I've always been a Canon girl." I got a chuckle out of it.

You're in Lebanon? Hello, neighbor! Are you going to the horse and carriage parade next Saturday to shoot? (Photos, not horses).

Must be a common theme at Disney. One of their photogs said something to me about him having some competition. This with my 50D (with grip) and 17-85.

Wow this thread amazing. I am on page 172 and have spent two nights reading it. I've got work tommorow and should really sleep right now. Damn.

Anyhows, I was mistaken for a press photographer today. I was just out shooting some christmas stuff downtown when some teenagers said loudly that I must be from the local newspaper. Me in my very serious working "mode" didn't really pick up on it untill they had passed me by.

I was just using a gripped 50d, 430 EX II and my 70-200 f/4.
Bumping into the actual photographer from the local newspaper I realize that I am packing better gear than he is. He was using a 500d and a non L lens from what I could tell. My best guess it was a nifty fifty.

We plan on going. We've gone every year we've lived here. If you go, let me know and we'll meet up.

It isn't about the camera for a working photographer - its about the results. And if they can get by with cheap, so much the better for profits.

And I guess his pictures got published, not yours. It's very little about the gear really. ;)

Considering that newspaper photographers are getting printed on newsprint paper most cell phone cameras would have enough resolution......

I'd say most photojournalists' photos get used for other things besides newsprint though, so they do need better quality for other work.

On a local level I'm sure there are quite often hobby photographers that sport better equipment than the pros though, hobbyists don't have to worry about pesky things like a black bottom line. :)

Anders; while I do not want to start a flame war I do want to point out that I limited my newsprint comment to photographers who work for newspapers, rather than photojournalist's in general. Like any working tradesman a photojournalist will choose to use the tools (camera/lens combination) which will work for the assignment at hand.

This gives me an idea, The next time a paper wants me to work for free, I'll pick up a disposable camera from the local drugstore, take the shot and then take the camera to the paper so they can process the "RAW" image.

Hay film is film isn't it? Now whether or not your local newspaper still has the equipment, chemicals (which are not out of date) and a staff member who remembers how to develop film is an entirely different question.

I suspect that they don't .....

The equipment may not have been sold, but the chemicals were ether used up or have expired and the trained photographers who had the knowledge were layed off or have retired...

If, that is, either you can find a disposable that has B&W film or they actually had a C-41 lab.

Since this was not such a huge event he was probably only a reporter with one of the papers cameras. Most photographers working for papers have their own gear just like you and me but obviously tailored for their work. And about the published part, I actually got one of my pictures on the frontpage of a local paper.
