I saw the public debut of this beast at PMA a couple years ago...

Trust me when I tell you that pictures don't do it justice. Yeah it's big but the thing has enormous mass as well. Consider what diameter of front element you need for 800mm @ f/2.8!

I think the tactical green is a nice touch but if anyone ever drags one of those out near an airbase, they're probably going to find themselves face down in the dirt ASAP.

I think a 800 f/4 will already have bigger diameter than a 500mm 2.8. Can't imagine how gigantic the 2.8 version could be.....

I'm sure we've all got this, but i was just shooting some pelican's and this guy says, "Wow, that's a big camera!" I said, "Actually its just a small camera with a big lens!"

A kid walks by and says, "Daddy look at those binoculars!"

All with the 500mm.

i'm confused... you have a 500mm binocular, or you have two 500mm 4L and the kid mistake it as a binocular....:p

I basically only use the lens to view things really, so yes its a Canon 500mm F4L binocular!

Monocular would perhaps be the right name. :)

An 800mm f/4 lens would have a minimum diameter of 200mm (7.9 in.).

A 500mm f/2.8 lens would have a minimum diameter of 179mm (7.0 in.).

An 800mm f/2.8 lens would have a minimum diameter of 286mm (11.25 in).

Ken Rockwell handholds them all.

Nope he doesn't - he feels that if you need a telephoto lens your too far away from the action and need to get closer! The kit lens is the only one you need according to him!

Then i am quite certain that my moon shot is not as good as his then:(

(sorry, i have an image in my mind that he is on a space suit on a space shuttle with a nikon 18-55mm kit lens just to get 10x closer for 55mm...)

I'd love to see him shoot wild grizzlies.

Maybe he's the one who captured those snarling wolf images for the Nikon magazine ads of a few years ago.

Yup! I'd stand way back and capture him doing it with my long telephoto. I'd have to use a 1D IV, since they would definitely be action shots.

Of course that would be the 1200mm lens wouldn't it?

I think his 12-24mm would be the perfect lens for him to use for close ups!
