OKAY!!

I have an article from Pop Photo years ago and they compared a dslr to a top of the line slr and high grade film. I carry that article in my pocket almost everywhere I go. It's not the best article, but it makes people shut up.

Do you really care that much? I've stopped worrying. Crusading is for the energetic, I'd rather take pictures.

I don't bring it up unless people really push me. Maybe it's just my town, but it seems like I always run into people in my town that shoot strictly film and think film is holier than thou. On more than one occasion people have given me speeches. That is where the article comes in handy, they usually aren't equiped with such rescources.

Too funny. I have nothing against film, but I think everybody should respect technological advacenemnts in modern day.

I like both... I'm not very good with film, so if I think I'm going to have a moving subject, or will want to take a lot of pictures, I will use my 300D. If I am just playing a bit, and want to capture something that catches my eye, I might pull out the A-1.

Just got my 70-200 f/2.8L non-is this evening. Decided to take a drive to a nice shopping plaza and take pictures of their well designed Christmas lights. As I was about to frame my shot, one of the mom's from a nearby family walks up to me and asks if I work for the local paper. I said 'no mam' politely. That made me giggle!

Lately my friend (who I shoot with) says "stalker lens" when I put the 70-200 F/4L on, he's just kidding, but I tihnk it's funny as it's not even that distant a zoom.
Mm, otherwize, lately, it's more "are you professionals / photographers?" and me getting kicked outta places (well told we cannot take photos) with my buddy cause we have cameras (laughs while guy in background takes photo with phone and other guy takes photo with P&S). I'm not sure if it's my age or what. I was pretty frusterated tonight in the mall where the lighting was excellent (unlike most malls) and there were a lot of pretty ladies we were going to pull over with our model release forms in hand :(.

Last night at my grand-daughter's Christmas concert someone said, "ooohh, that must really take good pictures".

Quite out of character, I was stuck for words.

My largest (and only) lens on my 30D is a 25 - 105 that didn't have the hood on at the time, and which is usually racked in to minium length. If I'd had a "white one" they would probably have worshipped me.

When did voluptuous become voluminous?

This is a great observation. Dress reasonably, smile, be gracious - I try to do all of the above. I avoid sticking big glass in people's faces and/or blocking their view, and I try to let others through to get a shot whenever I can.

A couple of years ago I was visiting Prague with my daughter and we stumbled across the Prague marathon. I got smart for once and figured out that if we climbed a certain tower, I'd get some great pics. Since the tower was ancient, the windows were few and small. I found a perfect one that had been staked out by two pros.

The thing was, they were happy to let me horn in with my dinky G3 and teleconverter. I got a lot of great shots until the starting time approached, at which point they politely informed me that they had a job to do now, setting me on my way with a friendly wave. I wound up on the roof, with a slightly poorer angle, for the start. Great memories!

(P.S. My own comment about a birder's long lens, made to my wife recently, was "See that white lens? It cost more than my new camera." I was mostly setting her up to not get excited sometime in the future when I buy a nice lens of my own...)

Geoff
All I want is a 10-2000 f/0.5L with no distortion that weighs 100 grams, fits in my pocket, and costs $300. Is that too much to ask?

The other day, I was walking with my XT and 75-300 on a pod when I hear guys asking if I am with a TV crew

Actually not so farfetched. TV news crews tend to be associated with the 'big cameras' - while their shoulder-carried rigs are bigger than ours the mental image has somehow stuck.

I was once asked "Are you shooting video with that?" (5D and 300 f/4L IS scaring all the tourists ;) ) "No, just still photos" (said nicely too - be nice about it, they are just curious.. well of course if they get nasty then it's a different story)

Has anyone here made ridiculous comments?
I.E. at festival of lights last night, I was whining a lot cause the group I was supose to meet up with didn't really "meet up" before-hand, and we were all shooting alone in a huge crowded crowd (play on words?) The lighting was awful and too many photographers were there.
Anyway, one guy had a tall tripod and some camcorder, and felt the need to raise it up in the air to pretty much infront of all the things (not sure what the things in the parades were called, costumes?) faces, and ruin probably a ton of photos.
