I think you mis-read his post and the remark he was responding to.

Yes he completely misquoted him

I dunno, that seems like an awful thing to say to someone just asking an innocent question. If they were being very rude or whatever i could understand a retort like that, but if someone just curiously asked me, i wouldnt go as far as practically insulting someone

She went out of her way to be rude about it. I didn't even notice her until she told me not to take her picture. It was her tone that got the response. Normally I don't react to people like her but something about her tone rubbed me wrong. 99 out of 100 times I probably would have just ignored her.

Another funny thing I’ve noticed. When someone with a P&S asks you to take a pic of them with their P&S, and they notice that you’ve got a (dSLR + lens + hood =) bigger package, they automatically think you will know how to work their P&S (including all the features).

I guess then it was somewhat deserved :)

I sold my dad my old Sony F717, and to this day when he asks me how to do something with it, i still cant figure it out. It's the most confusing and frustrating camera ive ever had. The 20D is a joy to use in comparison

lucky enough they all tend to have general symbols such as the preview and flash and such.

try the "little kids" trick
hold it up to your eye - put your finger over the lens then take the shot
they wont ask you again

lol

Reminded me that my roommate always used to comment on "the cute little shutter noise, just like a real camera" that came from my 300D. Not really big lens related, but it always made me chuckle :)

My response would be the following: "you know you can get a warm glass of shut the hell up"

Hi from a new JUNIOR member. I purchased a 20D a couple of years ago. It was my first DSLR after graduating from a P & S. I guess I embarrassed myself more than anyone else could have. I was at a concert and had a 70-200L attached. One of the lead singers walked by and posed for a pic with my wife. Of course, I panicked and went back into P&S mode. Held the camera at arms length and then hesitated when I couldn't see the shot on my LCD. I quickly regained my composure and got the shot, but I felt like an idiot the rest of the day... I don't know if the singer caught the error, but his smile sure sounded like a comment to me... :o

I've done something very similar before. I was at a car show, where we had managed to bring a certain automotive celebrity in as a guest. Naturally, there was a lot of picture taking. One guy brought his Noink D70, and asked me if I could take a picture of him and said celeb. I said sure, grabbed his camera, and held it out in front of me like I would with a P&S. After a few seconds of trying to decide which button would turn on the LCD preview, I gave up and used the viewfinder.

Yeah, that was a while ago. At the time, I really had no idea that you couldn't use the LCD on a dSLR to take pictures. I felt a little silly :p.

I had this same thing happen. A few months ago I was taking pictures at a zoo, and this woman saw me using my 750-300mm zoom lens. She stopped me and asked if I didn't mind taking a picture of her family, and said she knew her camera wasn't as fancy or advanced as mine but hoped I didn't mind. Uhh okay, sure. But then I looked at it and realized, I've used many P&S cameras but I wasn't sure about that one.

I didn't want to be rude, but I also didn't want to look stupid so I asked her if my wife could do it instead. Man, if looks could kill!! She let my wife do it and thanked her, but you could just see in her eyes that she didn't like my response. I believe she thought I was acting like I was too good... but in reality, I just didn't want to ebmarrass myself by not being able to work a simple P&S camera!!
