Newbie Question - Tethering a 350D

Hi Everyone,

I'm a newbie here... pretty much also to digital photography. So there's the excuses for my basic question out of the way :o :o

I have bought a Canon 350D that I am using in my home studio - various still life subjects, plus to create a fine art self portfolio. I read somewhere that I can connect my 350D to my PC and see the results straightaway, rather than keep taking the CF card out and downloading images. How do I do this "tethering" e.g. software, leads etc. etc.??

Thanks for your help in advance.

Claire

have you tried the ZoomBrowser EX software that comes in the box, with the cable that Canon supply?

RemoteCapture (I think 2.7 is the latest version) is part of Canon Utilities suite that you got on CD together with the camera.
It works fine, I made some nice self-portraits with it..

Welcome to the forum, BTW!

Havent done this with a 350D, but have with both the 10D and 5D.

I use DSLR Remote from www.breezesys.com (external link) and have it set up so images open straight away in Photoshop.

Thanks for the replies guys :)

Errrmmm the software and leads that came in the box... oh yes them.... Ahh but in my defence I have been told not to install the Canon software, especially if I already have PS. Right or wrong?

Ok... I'm off to check out Remote Capture and Breezebrowser as suggested by Gary.

That lead is very short... trip needed to buy a longer one this morning.

Wrong. it's up to you to decide. personally, i don't like photoshop for RAW file workflow, but many people do. i much prefer DPP that comes on the canon CD (updated from the site), but photoshop, or a similar tool can be essential in many other respects. it's just a case of suck it and see what works best for you.

chow for now :)

Hi...

Thanks for your reply :)

I'm getting to grips with understanding RAW... everything I have seen says I should be working in RAW rather than JPEG. There seem so much for this newbie to learn .

I did read a review singing the praises of Raw Shooter Premium, but that's not available now I understand.

Right now I'm concentrating on getting the equipment set up right, then I can decide on the best post processing workflow. Thanks for your thoughts on RAW and Photoshop. Canon's DPP software does look good. I found some very good video tutorials on it on the Canon learning site.

I installed Canon's Zoombrowser software this morning and it also put a lot of other programs on I don't want . So I downloaded the Remote DSLR trial and took some test shots. It looks a great software package but it will mean more ££, which I was planning to put towards lighting.

A lot of experimenting to do, good job I have a few days holiday... Thanks for your help :)

I'm interested in the same thing, Claire. I do a lot of pictures with large apertures, and I can't tell if I got the focus/DOF right until I see the shot. Correct me if I'm wrong (I may well be), but I think that you can only do tethered shooting with the bundled software if you have a Firewire port. You can get a Firewire card pretty cheap, but still a lot of PCs don't have one. I see also that there are programs that will allow you to do tethered shooting over USB, so I wonder which option to pick: add a Firewire card and shoot using the bundled software, or buy the USB software. . .

Its not the same thing, but just for fun you can plug your camera into a TV via a video cable while shooting, and your images will appear on the TV rather than the LCD. You wont get much detail on the TV, but its fun to play around with.

Patrick, it depends what leads came with your camera. Both my Canons came with USB leads so that is what I use (admittedly with a 5m extension). Images take approx 4 seconds to appear on screen.

Because the images appear in Photoshop it is far easier to zoom into certain parts on a computer than it is on a TV

And you're using Breezesys DSLR Remote, not the bundled tethered shooting program, right? Can you (or anyone else) tell me one way or the other whether RemoteCapture will work over USB?

Remote Capture works over the same cable you'd use to download files from your camera. If,like the 5D, D30, D60, 10D, 20D, 30D, 300D, 350D, you use USB to download, you also use USB for Remote Capture. If, as in the 1D, 1Ds,1D II,1Ds II, and 1D II N, your download via FireWire, you'd also Remote Capture with FireWire. Incidentally, DSLR Remote has the same requirements for cables, I believe (since it's a limitation imposed by how the camera can send image data out more than anything else).

Just to confirm both Remote Capture and DSLR Remote work with a USB cable. I've used both today. I just hate the other junk that the Canon software has put on my PC though.

I'm glad I posted here and really appreciate the help everyone has given - it has really helped my workflow. Being able to preview images and then get instant results on my PC has already improve my speed and quality. No more taking a bunch of images that end up in the Recycle Bin.

Where it has helped most though is with the self portrait and portfolio work. I can now see the results without having to leave the "set".

I installed Zoombrowser and EOS Capture on my PC, and I'm getting a "Camera is not recognized" error message when I try to launch EOS Capture. The camera is switched on and connected to the PC via USB2.0. Anyone ran into this problem before?
