Hello all:
Took these at the weekend, but still can't come up with an ID.
Western Tanager was my best effort, but that may be a bit of wishful thinking. The Western Tanager would be well out of its range here in Southern Ontario, but it is listed as a "rare" visitor in Sibleys and an "occasional" visitor in an Ontario bird book, which says there have been many reports, but few confirmed sightings.
It is much larger than Yellow Warbler and a bit bigger than American Goldfinch. There was a noticeable orangish-red tinge to the crown.
I have posted these on birdforum.net as well. Answers so far say bill is wrong for tanager family.
Any ideas -- and hopefully some input from Western U.S. birders -- would be most welcome.
I'm still holding out hope for Western Tanager, possibly immature.
cheers,
jim
