Hello all:
Took these at the weekend, but still can't come up with an ID.
Western Tanager was my best effort, but that may be a bit of wishful thinking. The Western Tanager would be well out of its range here in Southern Ontario, but it is listed as a "rare" visitor in Sibleys and an "occasional" visitor in an Ontario bird book, which says there have been many reports, but few confirmed sightings.
It is much larger than Yellow Warbler and a bit bigger than American Goldfinch. There was a noticeable orangish-red tinge to the crown.
I have posted these on birdforum.net as well. Answers so far say bill is wrong for tanager family.
Any ideas -- and hopefully some input from Western U.S. birders -- would be most welcome.
I'm still holding out hope for Western Tanager, possibly immature.

cheers,
jim

Dont know what this is but you got two very nice shots of it. Too bad the background is so bright or this would have been a stunner. Thank you for sharing. Where did you find this guy?

Was lucky to get these ... shooting into the sun tends to blow the backgrounds. Photos taken in Etobicoke.

cheers,
jim

Update:
One of the posters at birdforum.net came up with Saffron Finch, which I agree with after doing a Google search and finding similar pix. This finch is a South American native and non-migratory, so it looks like I have an escapee.

cheers,
jim

lol, you may well have one there... i just did a google for these and apparently they are on of the many birds that are excellent escape artists... this group includes others such as eagle owls ( ) nd budgies lol!!! i once knew someone whos budgie would actualy try repeatedly to squeeze through the bars of its cage... although she had found it in her garden one day and it flew into her house so it was an escapee already lol... so she keeps a double eye (well i guess both her eyes lol) on it ... goos pics!! don't know why i thought u should know that little chapter of my life, but oh well... :D

Never seen a bird like it before, what a great find Jim.
Nice colours, yellow with a blend of orange on the head. Nice ones.
