New symptom just appeared with my camera. When using the main dial it will only function in one direction. Example........In AV mode. If I turn the main dial to clockwise, aperature will change from say 2.8 and go up. If I turn main dial counterclockwise, aperature setting will not go back down but will proceed up. What the heck is going on ?????

This symptom is true in all aspects of use whether it is navigating menus or in other modes such as TV or P mode. I can only increase settings no matter what direction I turn the main dial. I have tried taking out the battery and re-inserting, what other things should I do? Did I accidently change a setting? I tried using my Opteka battery grip main dial and had the same symptom. Will re-installing the firmware rectify the problem?

Have you tried removing both the main battery and the button cell and letting it sit? I doubt that re-installing the firmware will solve this.

I would also try to take out and reseat the lens in the event that either it is not making full contact or its not fitted properly.

This happened to me once. I found it was a problem with the grip. Take the grip off the camera and try it.

I have tried without the grip......X05runner, Don't know what you mean. I was using the kit lens when this happened and then switched to my Tamron Lens, the 28-75.

This phenomenon also occurs without a lens on the camera. If you scroll through menus you can only travel in one direction no matter what direction you turn the dial. Sounds to me like the dial went bad but will wait to send it in and see anyone else has a suggestion.

If it were only happening with the camera's Main Dial, I'd agree that it sounded like a problem there; since you say it's also happening with the Main Dial on the grip, in exactly the same way, I'd suspect the problem to be elsewhere. As a last resort prior to sending it in, you might try rre-flashing the firmware, but I don't hink that will really help. It might even be difficult to manage, trying to navigate one-way through the process.

No answers here so I sent it in to Canon. If I get an answer I will post the solution.

I had the exact same issue the other week with my XT. No luck with anything. Different lenses, batteries etc. However in the morning it was fine again.

Hope not to scare everyone here. But I just received my camera back from Canon. They performed the following repairs but did not indicate what the problem was exactly. They replaced the top cover assembly which is the area around the main dial (they replaced the main dial switch) and the shutter button. They cleaned the sensor (unrelated standard warranty work when you send a camera in), they updated the firmware, probably becuase they also replaced the Printed Circuit Board (I was up to date on the firmware prior to sending it in). At least I got all this through warranty but why would this fail? Is this a heat related failure (maybe I left it in the car one hot day but I will deny deny deny, or a fault in the circuit board that permits the type of issue. I ask the second part of this question because others have had this issue, but were fortunately able to rectify the problem through various means. I found so many answers around the web and there was not one clear answer. Mine seemed fatal but others are able to remove a battery and all is okay?

Good luck to all. Sorry I raised more questions than answers.

It seems you were just unlucky. The fact that nobody else could help, or had seem anything similar, suggests it was an isolated fault rather than an endemic one.

Yes, but the symptom has been reported widely, typically by users of the Rebel Xt and a battery grip (Canon or Opteka does not matter).

Like any manufactured goods, a small percentage will either be faulty immediately after production or fail within a short time of first being used.

Although you state this fault is widely reported, there are a far greater number of xt/350D users who haven't reported this problem because they haven't suffered from it.

You are one of those who unfortunately got a camera thet was in that minority that failed but Canon honoured their warranty promise and you are again in possesion of a working camera. Inconvenient for the time you were without maybe but it worked out in the end. Glad it was sorted out quickly.
