This is the last time I will wear my uniform. I have retired. I took this in my livingroom.

WOW! I certainly was not looking for a “thank you.” I do appreciate the kind words from everyone. I joined the U.S. Coast Guard twenty years ago because I liked the idea of helping people which I have done many times during my career. My wife has been with me the entire time. The uniform is the Dinner Dress; it would be worn in place of a tux. It is now sealed in a bag in the back of the closet. Again—thank you for the kind words.

As for the image: I shot this in my living room. I have one strobe pointing at the flag/background; one strobe is to camera left bounced into a silver umbrella; my 420EX is pointing at the ceiling (the four small contacts are covered with electrical tape to disable the TTL preflash); my older son has the camera and my younger son is standing on a chair to camera right holding a reflector. We are about six feet away from the background. Canon 20D ISO100 1/200 sec RAW, Canon EF 28-105 3.5-4.5 at 50mm f6.3, handheld.

I'm sure the resolution on the post is not as sharp as the one you got at from the camera, but from what I can see, the lighting is not harsh at all and very flattering for both you and your wife. Thanks for posting and I'm going to try that set-up in my living room when I get it all out again.

I also want to thank you for your service. My nephew just graduated from the Air Force Academy and will start flight school this fall. I asked if he was going to stay in the service. He said he will stay the 20 years until retirement due to the fact that he enjoys the travel and the many opportunities he will have. He wants to fly and this is exactly the life he had wanted from an early age. He admitted that the road is hard, but will be worth it.

Well... congrats! While sometimes it must seem like nobody cares that you put your butt on the line day in and day out to make sure the shores of this country are safe for everyone who lives here, I want you to rest assured that many of us are not only aware... but are extremely thankful for all your hard work and your many sacrafices. So I echo those who have done so previously... Thank you VERY much for your service.
