I like the narrow depth of field on the second shot and I also like your choice of black and white for that photo.

The first photo seems to have no focal point. Are we suppose to be drawn to the golfer or the green or the whole view? It would seem to me that you are going for the whole view but at f2 and 1/4000 there is no way for much of the photo to be in focus. Maybe you could have moved a little to the left and had a shot that worked better in portrait mode with the golfer on the left side of the photo and the green on the left. And on the golfer in a shot like that, you might want to get him on the backswing so you would have more of the front of his body and a complete profile of his face.

Agreed... it seems obvious now :o

I'm assuming that portrait mode would have slowed the shutter speed. How much slower should I have made the shutter speed, if I still wanted to keep the ball frozen?

Thanks for your comments:D

With the ball going directly away from you it would focus better than going across. You could probably have reduce shutter speed to 1/1000 or maybe a little less and increase your aperture to get better overall focus. I hope he had a draw on that shot. Looks like it's heading for the water on the right side. Also with these type of shots I would normally use burst mode which will increase your chance of getting a good shot.I really like the second and yes the B&W is a good effect.

Unfortunatly (for him), there was no draw. The ball landed in the water (along with that huge divot you also see). Thanks for the tips.
