Hi all,
How confident are all of you who have purchased camera,s from Jessops in the UK that you have purchased new goods,
You may remember my last post the other night stating I'd finally got my EOS 350 D well upon inspection the viewfinder already had a black speck in it,and the mirror plate inside was smudged,I have returned the item today for an exchange and upon inspecting the item at home tonight have discovered a small scratch on the edge at the top of the pop up flash, the package is exclusive to Jessops ie the silver bodied model and comes with a camera bag,the bag in the box tonight is smaller and different to the one I got on monday and is indeed different to the one on the box illustration,I Don't think I'm getting factory sealed merchandise what do you all think????
kindest regards
very disheartened

I only ever buy small items from them in store as they are more expensive than any on line shop. I doubt that they sell returned, repackaged stuff as they don't allow returns unless there is a fault with it in which case they'd exchange and send the faulty one back to the manufacturer.

Its possible that the dust and scratches could have been introduced at the packing stage...

Can't really help, sorry

I have bought a variety of camera and lenses from several branches of Jessops, and never had a problem with any of them.

Jessops are dealers, they dont make the cameras they sell. If there is dust inside the camera it left the factory like that. Ditto for a scratched body. And if you were happy to buy a model that had been used as a demo in the shop instead of a box with a unbroken seal - how is that their fault? They have done all they can, and are required to, by exchanging it for you.

My guess is that your have just been unlucky.

Hi there,
I fully understand that Jessops do not make cameras,I'm not that much of a digital virgin LOL
Where did I mention that I purchased a demo model????,
I certainly would not have purchased a demo model knowingly, there is a large outer box containing the camera box inside and a loose bag.
As regards to the camera box indeed none of the two i have looked at have seals on and showed no sign of a seal being removed.

Don't blast the newbie guys c'mon

I'm simply trying to discover if I've been sold used goods

Kindest regards
TYS

I bought my 350D from Jessops at xmas, and specifically asked the sales guy for a unopened box. Have to admit his customer service was good and he bought a new one from out the back and opened it all in front of me.

For me i haven't had any problem at all, but i am wary of the way things are handled and when you're spending that kind of money i want to make sure that i get it perfect.

The only advantage i see to buying a camera from Jessops is the extended warranty. If i have an issue i don't have to worry about posting the package back.., can just walk into any store and hand it over the counter.

My Canon can.. I just need to find out how

Got to be better than Dixons, I looked at a len's years ago, and the dipstick of a sales assistant, put it down resting the lens on its rear element. Needless to say I didnt buy the len's there.

Hi all,
Going back in the morning for a "chat" about the situation,I'm not happy with the camera at all,I think if you're paying close to £700 for a package you should really be getting mint gear.It also puts a downer on finally getting what you want after so long...............sigh

Hi All,
just taken the package back and got a full refund,
They had 3 more "new" ones just come in,they all had a spot where it shouldn't be in different places in the rangefinder,
They were gracious enough to give me a full refund however lesson learned,I will not be going back to Jessops for anything as my confidence in them has now been well and truly damaged.
Thanks for all your advice everyone
Any recommendations as to where I should maybe look now?????

Kindest regards

TYS

I guess you were just unlucky. I got my 350D from my local branch of Jessops, and a Sigma zoom from a Central London branch, about 3 months ago. (In both cases their prices were better than I had seen anywhere else, including the web.) Both times I got to handle a camera/lens that was in the diasplay cabinet, and then when I decided I did want to buy it they went into the stockroom and got out an unopened box. I'd have insisted on that anyway, but I didn't have to.

if you're after a bricks n mortar store - do you have a Jacobs-digital store nearby? i have always found them excellent in terms of knowledge, even the younger members of staff male or female all seem to know what they are talking about. prices are average high street store prices. Online, go for AJPurdy (even though their website blows!) i have purchased from them and the service and item quality was top notch.

I got my 17-40 from Jessops at a good price, and it's OK. However, I don't usually buy from them if possible, simply 'cos they're more expensive than online stores, and I don't think the sales staff are that well trained. I'd rather go to a smaller shop run by enthusiasts who care about the stuff they sell. Or buy online...

Tys - I think you did the right thing to get a refund. At least you didn't lose out.

Online try Warehouse Express, I use them a lot and there delivery service is great. Order before 1pm and I think you get it delivered the following day.

It goes like this :-
The stuff in the cabinets are played with by the staff and handled by Joe Public every day, changing lenses etc.
Even when the stuff is out of stock, it is usually brought in from another branch where the same thing has happened.
Don't get me wrong - most shops do this !!!!

I saw a 20D get dropped in the display cabinet at Jessops. When I went to buy one a couple of days later I was offered the same camera (it was their last one) but no offer of a discount for being a display model (not that I would have accepted it). I left and went to Dixons, same story, only the display camera left and they happily admitted a colleague had borrowed it for a weekend for "product familiarisation"; discount offered - £8 (from £850..).

Happy ending, I went to Jacobs, got an unopened one, for £50 less and a 1GB CF card as well. Guess where I shop now? :)
