I just bought a 17-55mm 2.8 IS from Jessops - they price matched the cheapest online price I could find (£698 ). I really didn't think they'd match it as their instore price was £869 - but lo and behold...

In my experience, depends on the day of the week and who you talk to whether they'll match. I've been turned down in one store (where a week or two earlier they matched my dSLR), travelled a few miles and had another item matched without question.

As far as ordering lenses goes, I tried to get two extremely popular lenses (Canon and Tamron) ordered in. After about 4 months, I found that they'd arrived and I'd never been told (called in 4 times over the period) before they cancelled my order. Most recently I've been waiting for a reflector for literally months.

Absolutely, completely shocking service. Sadly, they get away with it cause there's so little competition here :( Even complaining to their customer services has only had a one response in three separate complaints. Never even so much as a sorry :(

For me, it's now Calumet all the way. Great deals, knowledgeable & helpful staff, and quick turnaround on orders.

I'm afraid I'm one of the "hypocritical and unethical" people who goes to Jessops, tries stuff out, then buys it off the internet. Got my 350D kit from Amazon.co.uk (yes, really). It was absolutely brand new in box with cellophane wrapping then with a security tape inside the cellophane.

Just bought my 50/1.4 from Warehouse Express. Again, brand new in box, delivered in 24hrs from order.

I used to use an independent when I was a novice shooting film. Sadly now I don't have the money to give them my patronage when the internet is so much cheaper. Their "value add" is also much lower to me now that I know much more about what I'm doing. I'll probably go to them for my next tripod though, because then the touch & feel will be important and the value add will be back.

Can you use the 10% on the sale? You could pick up a 350d for £420! Not, that I'm going to, I have my eye on a 70-200 at some point.

Should the shutter actuator counter be a bit of a clue to whether the camera is "new" or not.

Of course, with their 30 day "no question asked" money back guarantee, you could always get a new camera for that "special occasion" and then take back for a full refund (Brum even has 1ds II's in stock), but noone would be so devious, would they :D

When I bought my 350D and they pricematched the cheapest UK based supplier I could find. ( I tried Pixmania but they're French). In the end the deal wasn't far off Pixmania.

I've bought 2 lenses from them, my nifty fifty and a Sigma 70-300. Both were on offer or were as cheap as getting it mail order once carriage taken into account, plus I had it in my hand, a face to face relationship and if it goes wrong I could take it back and kick up a stink.

One day there will be no local camera stores at all and then everyone will complain!

My Jessops has some reasonably clued up staff in there.

I have bought ALL the stuff in my sig from Jessops - the DSLR was price matched, but the L lenses weren't. What swung it for me was the fact that I could walk out with the lenses there and then, no waiting in for a courier, no problems with return, they have a 30 day no quibble return.

BUT I have to admit I think my 20D had been 'fiddled' about with - I was fairly green then, but now I'd be much more insistent on making sure the box was unopened. I am pretty sure they put demo models back in the boxes and sell them as new.
