wow, old thread.

I am also a car guy. I heard that it's BLUE Dawn that is the magic forumla; the other colours are not nearly as good.

FWIW, a common technique for getting scrupulously clean glass surfaces in molecular biology work is to use about a 2% solution of detergent (typically Triton X100) in DI water and wearing latex gloves, clean the surface with the thumb or forefinger. The item is then rinsed in DI water (or in extreme cases RO purified water) and then, to assist drying, is briefly wet with acetone (an old chemistry trick), then air dried.
There are many similarities between this technique and what Skip described. Use of acetone on glued compound elements may not be advisable, however.

I've been cleaning my eyeglasses that way for years. The only thing I do differently is use filtered compressed air from my airbrush compressor to blow any moisture out of the crevice between the frame and lens.

Trouble is there's so many variant of the product these days. I think it's worth mentioning to use the "original" or "regular" Dawn. I've also used this for many different things over the years.
