RAW + small JPG for me. That way, I can download shots to my FlashTrax and see them on a larger screen than that of my 20D. Also a bit of a backup, in case a RAW file would become corrupt. But I've never had one.

Only raw.

But since I got the 1D mk IIN I have considered to shoot raw plus small jpeg because of dual card capability. The camera can store raw on one card and jpeg on the other so I could set it up to store raw on the 4 GB cf cards and small jpeg on a 2 GB SD card. But so far I have not seen the need to do that so I'll keep shooting raw only.

You have dual card capability??... that is impressive. so, stupid question alert and I don't know why i'm asking it will be a long, long time before I can afford a camera like that.. but..... dual card does that mean you can put two cards in the camera at once and have them fill up one at a time and not have to worry about it or one card for each format?...

Raw + s Jpeg to allow a quick viewing of the pics on Jpeg, then select the raw files I want to keep, saves a lot of wairing time when transfering from Card to PC.

It has 1 CF card slot and 1 SD card slot. They can be used in different ways.

- camera can store the shame images on both cards.
- camera can store raw on one and jpeg on the other
- what most seem to doo. use cf as main card. have a spare sd card. then when shooting action and the cf card is full you can quickly switch to the sd card and continue shooting. then when there is a break you can change the cf card and continue on that. But the camera can't switch automatically. That would be perfect if it could.

for me it comes down to what I am shooting at the time. If I am shooting sports then I will use JPG. Also if I plan on taking alot of photos then I would use JPG. I would rather capture 1/2 good that miss it all together.

However when I am taking my time shooting a subject and also know that I am going to develop them more. or even have the option of developing them more then I will shoot RAW+large JPG.

It takes time to get used to shooting in RAW but I understand the need for it in my style of photography.

The only thing that I haven't figured out yet and that's how to get the the embeded jpg out of the raw.

There is no embedded JPG in RAW: you must convert the RAW to JPG with your computer and a specialised tool. It sounds more difficult than it is. Try it, you won't regret.

Yes there is. Thats how the Epson P2000 can display raws. It extracts the imbedded jpeg.

so following that then, if I change the setting to small jpg when I covert the RAW file I will have a smaller file ? if not then what's the setting for ? if so then I will try it and see.

Ok then, how do one see the imbedded jpg? I have got Digital Photo Professional, adobe lightroom and Rawshooter installed.

That is a good question. I don't use any of the programs You list and I don't extract the jpeg my self I do the raw convert.

But I did a goggle search and Breeze Browser for example can extract the jpeg.

I did RAW+JPG once or twice but it just ate my cards for lunch. So I go back to my 10D ways and shoot just RAW and convert from there.

Any previews/thumbnails you see will be taken from the embedded JPG (much faster).

If you convert the RAW it's full size.
If you extract the JPG it's whatever size you've set it to be.

I set my 10D to RAW + Large Fine JPG.

I extract the JPG's and if one isn't up to scratch then I use the RAW as a negative and process it myself.
