I have a new canon 100mm and am learning just how hard it is to get those great bug shots

You shot two bugs!

The first looks like a grasshopper of some sort, and the second is a hoverfly.

The Canon 100mm macro is an excellent lens. I hope you enjoy it!

As for tips, the EXIF on your first shot said it was taken at 1/6th shutter speed and f/16. I assume this was with a tripod? In the future, try to shoot at f/9-f/11 more often. The lens is its sharpest here, and the sharpness falls off at higher aperture settings.

The DOF in the second one is very shallow, but you did a good job of capturing the head of the hover. The highlights are a little blown out, but for your first shots I'd say they are very good.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the tips. I was shooting f/16 to try and get more DOF will tubes help with that? Oh and yes it was on a tripod.

Actually, tubes give you less dof. They work by artificially lengthening the lens, which has an inverse effect on DOF. This makes them tougher to work with. I still shoot at f/9 with my tubes on, but if I miss the focus by just a tiny bit, it usually ruins the whole shot.

Still, I recommend shooting at f/9-f/11. You'll be amazed at the sharpness you gain. Also, you should be shooting closer to 1/200th shutter speed. Camera shake should be eliminated by 1/the focal length (in the Canon 100mm's case, 1/100), but at 1:1 magnification it really needs to be higher.

Good first shots :)
You'll find many of us here use flash to help with the aperture/speed settings.
Some hints & tips on how I do my shots here.

Smaller aperture (higher f/number) = more DOF. I'd use about f/9. It has a ton a sharpness and a good amount of DOF. F/11 sacrifices a little sharpness, but you gain DOF.

smaller apertures but as pointed out you will lose sharpness. You can also shoot side views so everything is in focus but these can become a bit samey after a while. Focus stacking is used by some here but damned if I can get it to work - combineZ is the preferred software and you can download it free

compact cameras with their smaller sensors give better DOF but are not as flexible as dslrs.

You actually lose sharpness with wider apertures too. The falloff occurs on both sides of the sweetspot. For the Canon 100mm, it's around f/8-f9. So, the apertures on either side suffer from falloff.
