Head over to the Strobist website. Hit the 'Lighting 101' link on the right side of the page and read those topics. This guy does amazing work with minimal equipment (he has a suggested kit that he pieced together for around $150 I think). Pretty good reading, I have looked it all over quite a few times over the past few months.
