im very well off to be honest but not a snob :) a tc on that lens will degrade the image quite a bit and as it will be f5.6 at 300mm even a 1.4 tc will mean manual focus unless its on a 1 series camera cant help in what to recomend sorry Oh And i have 2 tc's .
Rob.

I'm not very well off and definitely not a snob :) . Could be that there is not much experience with the lens in question and a teleconverter and that is why you haven't gotten many replies. I have the 70-300 IS f/4.0-5.6 and a Kenko Pro ... 1.4X and I get reasonably satisfactory results in IQ and AF in good light at 300mm. Even though max aperture at 300 is f/5.6, I believe AF availability is determined by the stated max aperture of the lens, in this case f/4.0.

Hi Warne,
I can help you with what not to buy. Don't buy a Canon because it won't fit, these only fit Canon L lenses above 135mm + some third party big glass. With third party TC's the Kenko pro seems quite popular as you will still retain auto focus in good light. I belive its because the its tricks the camera into thinking its not there. The Kenko is also reported to be sharp too. Other third party TC's may do the same I just don't Know which they are but I'm sure others will chip in and let you know.
IMO stick to a 1.4 TC and not the 2X, your already pushing things a bit and the extra light and sharpness of the 1.4 will probably be of benifit. It will also retain auto focus more often.
Hope this helps, Dellboy.

Well, there's the Teleconverter Sticky at the top of this forum. You'll go crazy trying to focus the 75-300 with any TC on it; and you won't generally get AF.

That lens just doesn't work well with TC's....but I use Tamron SP Pro's...and I am happy with both the price and the image quality

What Jon said! I had the IS version of that lens until recently, and there's no way it was usable with a TC.
