Hi Eric,

I guess 1/2 sec is too slow for a moonshot at a focal length of about 1120 mm. I normally don't shoot slower than 1/50 sec at those lengths because the moon travels so fast across the VF and I need a faster shutter speed to freeze it.

The 400 5.6L + 2x + 1.4x is f/16 wide open, and it should have its sweet sharpness spot between f/16 to f/22. Using this rig on a full or near full moon, I'd start an EV of f/22, ISO 400 and 1/100 - 1/125 sec, check the histogram and adjust from there.

The second shot looks much better...:)

Romy

Hi Nikolas,
Interesting question as it seems imposible, however most lenses will focus past infinity ( and hence past the moon) this is to allow for any expansion/contraction in the lens due to changes in temperature. At these small appertures differences are likely to be very small but bang on is still bang on if you want ever last bit of sharpness I suppose. Dellboy.

still a nice shot Tareq. :) I like how you still managed to capture the details of the moon. It just appears that some of the major features are enveloped by the darkness (which you had no control over anyways).

As dellboy explained it's easily possible in a technical sense.

In practical terms he may have just missfocused slightly when manually focussing. It's very tricky getting focus exactly right.
Besides that his focus screen may be slightly out.I know my 300D's was, and know of allmost no one who does alot of manual focussing who hasn't had to accurately calibrate their screen.

Here's a shot i got the other day while testing a lens. This is not quite the sharpest (of that session) but it sure does look the most interesting with the blue sky.
Sorry about the noise- i didn't bother to set the ISO to 100 for that shoot.
Taken with one of those supercheap 'preset' manual focus lenses, this one the 500/8 version.100% pixels crop with very slight selective sharpening and bluring
(moon shots look bad if oversharpened.in fact the the smooth areas look best when blured slightly

I find it strange u get such noisy shots at 100 iso.
Try bracketing shots.
