canon 500mm f4.5 non IS

Is it true that canon wont service these anymore?

I have a friend offering me one for 1k. It seems a good deal to me, but do you think it is worth it if they dont repair them now?. If there is anyone here who had/had this lens, any comments would be appreciated.

For $1,000, I'd take one. Just make sure nothing's wrong with it before you get it. No loose seals, no missing screws, no fungus in the lens, etc. You know..

Sounds good to me. Seems as though I still see them going for a few $k.

I believe there was a msg from Canon saying no more service on that lens as of Mar 06. Great lens though. I might not hesitate to get one for the right $. Used Sigma 500/4.5 is another choice.
