i'm looking to get a decent camera backpack that will also fit a laptop and maybe a tripod. What should i look into? The make and model of bag, there are few on ebay but i'm not sure if the bag will hold a laptop.

thanks

The Lowepro CompuTrekker AW (external link)is a very nice bag (in fact, I own one) that also has a laptop compartment-- however it will hold a laptop with a 15"-screen at the most. My laptop is 15.4", and so doesn't fit

Or, you could go with the big brother, the Computrekker Plus AW (external link) which, acorrding to the site, should hold a laptop with up to a 17" screen.

Both of these bags feature a well-designed external tripod holder-- I just wish mine would hold my laptop better. Oh well.

Have a look into Crumpler's range - I have the Whickey and Cox and they have several other bags of varying sizes.. I believe their biggest (Keystone maybe? I forget the nomenclature) can take a 17". Mine comfortably fits a 15", you certainly couldn't fit a 17 if it was any wider.

No tripod holder on mine at least but it is VERY comfortable and well made. It does not look at all like a camera bag to the casual observer and can only be opened from the back so it cannot be accessed (the main compartment anyway) whilst it is on your back. Big selling point for me.

It depends on the laptop size,

If you have a 15" then the Lowepro Computrekker AW will do.
If you have a 17" then the Lowepro Computrekker Plus AW will do.

I have both and I'm very happy with them, just bear in mind that once the Plus bag is full and you have your laptop in it, things start to get heavy.

On days I dont need laptop I use a Microtrkker 200

I have the Kata R-103 backpack and I love it. I have a 15" laptop and while it does have a little bit of extra room, I don't know if it's enough to fit a 17" It has a tripod holder, which I've used to hold my tripod or monopod depending on where I'm going.

The laptop that you fit in that bag, it wouldn't happen to be a 15.4" Macbook Pro, would it? I am wondering if mine would fit in there?

I have a Kata R-103 and my 15.4" laptop is a very close fit. It does come with 2 pieces of removable padding that keeps the laptop from bouncing around for those that have smaller laptops.

Here are a couple of pictures, albeit crappy, of the bag with the laptop. It may look like you can fit a larger laptop is in, but the way the bag tapers at the top the excess space on the left is useless.

Kata R-103 is a great camera backpack with laptop compartment and tripod holder. It won't fit 17" laptop, so don't bother trying it.
