How to upload RAW file

My memory card reader died, so I need to connect the camera through cable to the usb port of my pc to upload pictures. HOwever, it does not see the RAW format pictures when I use the cable? Why? How do I upload RAW format pictures using the cable? Is there anything I need to set on my camera 20D? I shot with both jpg and raw.

If you're using the Canon software, it should work fine (but you'll need to be in "Normal" communications mode). If you haven't loaded the Canon software, you may need to load the Microsoft RAW file viewer utility so the computer can learn that CR2 is a picture format and let you have access to it.

If you are looking at them through you photoediting software and NOT seeing the pictures just the little icons then I bet it is a software problem...

Not all phot editing software reads RAW...

good sandisk card readers are like 20 bucks on B&H

I bought one at walMart that reads 7 differnt cards for $17. I have only tried two of the slots, but it works like a champ...

What application are you using to do the upload?

In my mind it should make a difference if the card is being read by the camera or the card reader or what crod your using. What makes a difference is the software thats it is going to right?

Well, if you're using the camera, the OS is going to see it that way, so only look for "known" image file types (.CR2 isn't one) and an app. is going to have to know to work around that and hook into Canon's driver to find the RAW files. With a card reader, you're freed of that constraint. You're just looking at any old drive, so you can get any old file.

You have to load the Canon software and drivers from the disks that came with your camera if you want to be able to communicate with the camera in 'Normal' mode....

If you don't want to load a few hundred megabytes of software on your computer, just do like everyone else suggests and pick up a $20 card reader

Go buy a new card reader. The NEW sandisk and Lexars are very fast.

Download and install Raw image viewer which plugs into Windows Explorer.

If you are not running XP on a Windows PC. You should be!
Be sure and go to the tools tab, Windows update tab, and select custom, NOT the express tab. Install ALL the updates.
If you are not on DSL plan to spend several night updating if you haven't done updates yet.
