Ok, I am in: I am buying the 100 Macro. Do I really also need the Kenko tubes? Are they useful to combine with the macro lens?

You don't need tubes, but they are nice for greater than 1:1 magnification.

Both shot with the canon 100mm f/2.8 and Kenko tubes:

A jumping spider:

And a katydid (click on the picture for fullsize):

I recommend you get the tubues. They are great!

I do NOT think you should get the tubes with the lens. I think you need to learn macro for some months and then, when you are good, get the tubes.

Good point. Don't just start with the tubes. Focusing/composing at 2:1 is very tough. Get a few shots under your belt before taking this on.

I forgot to read that you had just bought the lens. Work with it for a while and hold off on the tubes for now. If you really like it, buy them down the road.

Thanks Omri.

The spider photo convinced me: it will take a lot of practice to master that setup. I will stick to the lens for a while. And I will use that money to get the TC to go with my 70-200 f/4. :D :D

Thanks to all for your kind advice.

I guess you would have to use a 1200mm lens + a 500mm tube ;);)

Looks more like a 500mm lens and a 1200mm tube, to get that extreme magnfication without putting yourself into jumping distance of a jumping spider!

The spider wouldn't dare jump into such a menacing weapon.
