How much are you looking to spend?

The Canon EF 17-40 f/4L is a fine wide angle lens and will go nicely with your 20D. If money is no issue, then you can spend almost twice the amount you would spend on the 17-40 and get the Canon EF 16-35 f/2.8L.

I own the 17-40 and its a great lens. Sometimes its a tad slow for indoor shooting, but throw on a speedlite and/or bump up the ISO and it does a wonderful job.

Good luck.

Couple of DSLRs, number of lenses and other stuff... plenty short on talent.

The 17-40 4L will set you back around $680 USD. It is a GREAT lens for the price. It comes down to what you shoot. Anything slower than f/4 is too slow for me. If you like to shoot indoor and low light shots you are going to want f/4 or faster. Zooms f/4 and faster tend to be very exspensive, the 17-40 being one of the cheaper fast Canon zooms. There is the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro DF, which is fast, good quality, and cheap at $429.00 USD.

I know you stated a preference for Canon lenses, but at your budget, you would have many more quality options if you would consider Sigma and Tamron as well. Are you looking for similar focal length as the kit lens? Wider? Longer? I've read many posts recommending the Sigma 17-70. I'm very satisfied with my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 and my Canon 17-85 f/4.0-5.6 IS. The Tamron is considerably less than $500 US and the Canon is around 500

I'm not sure you will find a 'good' wide angle Canon lens for under 500 bucks, unless it's a used model.

The 17-40 f/4L goes for about 680 at B&H. The EF-S 10-22mm will run you about 10 bucks more, but isn't of the same build quality as that of the 17-40. I've never used one though, but from what I've read folks really like it as well.

You may want to expand your manufacturer options a little. Sigma offers a 17-35mm f/2.8-4.0 lens, but I have no knowledge of its quality.

Try the Tamron 17-35...it is a very sharp lens that renders nice, true colors. IMO, it is a better value than the 17-40L. And I do have both.

Have a look at the lens section of the forum. There are a bunch of stickies that will give you advice, with links to past threads. also check out this website, The Digital Picture:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ (external link)

It will do a good job of telling you what is available, and covers issues like quality and L-lenses, and lens choices depending on purposes.

Hi Jason
If you can possibly squeeze a few more Quids or dollars - or whatever - go for the 10-22mm f4-5.6 USM for your wide angle and the 24-105mm f4-5.5 L IS USM to use as your everyday lens. You will not be disapointed.
I use both and they are both excellent.
You will then only need a telephoto and a macro - but don't let me influence you or you will have no cash in your pocket - like me.

Incidentally - I found no problem with the standard kit lens though.

Regards

Ray-P

Spending more money always opens up the options! An idea of budget helps, then add about 50% and you'll be happy. that's what happened to me. Happy but broke...
