With the Nikon D80 hitting the shelves in September, will Canon drop the 30D prices to below $1000? They have to, don't they?

If they do fall it'll primarily be as a consequence of Canon announcing the 50D at Photokina (not 40D because the number '4' is unlucky in Japan)

Why would they do that though? In my opinion, people are going to buy Nikon or Canon primarily due to brand loyalty, not necessarily price.

LOL - Besides, they better not, I'm waiting till 6:15 PDT to buy my 30D today!

Kev, I see you're in Toronto; me, too. The 30D is already available at $1199 from Buydig in the States, and $1479 Cdn from Aden Camera in Toronto. Prices have to fall because of the D80. Most new purchasers would feel they're getting a lot more for their money with the Nikon than the currently priced 30D.

... there's a phrase in the IT industry - "vaporware". It's just fantasy at this point.

I think it may fall, but to put things in perspective the 20D's price is now hitting the $999 mark. I don't think the price may fall by that much. It may fall a month of two after the Nikon is available. So you have to weight the potential savings against the joy of having a 30D for a few month that you can enjoy now til lthe prices fall, if they fall at all.

I think the 30D is in a slightly higher market than the D80 with it's Magnesium body and 5fps, where as D80 is aimed I think between the Rebel XT and the 30D.

I agree. I think the 30D overall is still the better camera, assuming the D80 still has the same noise issues as the D200, but it won't be perceived as such by buyers new to the market. They will look at 10 megapixels, etc, as more attractive, at a much lower price.

whichever it may be, i still agree that canon's D!gic 2 processor still rocks the DSLR competition!!

because lot's of people own neither (no brand loyalty) canon or nikon. they get what they perceive to be the best bang for the buck to get into DSLR photography.

also, i don't believe the D80 is direct competition for the 30D. the d200 is more direct competion to the 30D.

The pricing will determine that really, and I bet that Nikon will place this prooduct so that it competes squarely with the 30D. If comparing specs alone, the D80 compares very favourably IMHO.

Besides 10MP vs 8 MP, the 30D beat D80 in almost every single way, plus I dont see 2 MP as a advantage, esspecially you look at the high ISO noise level. But depends on how Nikon promote the D80...
