Just curious why the paparazzi don't use hoods?

I noted someone's comment about that fact here in a thread and started noticing it in photos. Not a hood in sight!

Is it an attempt the reduce the overall size of the lens/camera so they are not so obvious? This sounds silly when they so often congregate in large gangs. Not exactly discreet.

Or is it to reduce the length of the lens to minimize equipment collisions during the photo-op feeding frenzies?

I'd think you'd have to ask a paparrazi and I don't think there are any on here. I would think that it's the former - less conspicuous equipment, but I have no idea.

If it's a red carpet thing there's no need for lenshoods. You have your flash on the camera as key and the hood won't help any.

On long lenses hoods are quite big. When moving around with bunch of equipment or being in group of other photographers it can be quite annoying to have additional 20-30cm of hood pointing out. And there's times when you don't need hood at all. But this is from perspective of sport photographer not paparazzi. They might do this so they are less visible, but somehow I would doubt that. If there's 10 people with cameras I really don't think you can count this as invisible :)

I beleive it's because so they wont bump the subject with the hood. they are just about right next to them.

Thanks guys, my guess would favor the collision factor too.

That would be extremly hard to do anyway, since 70-200 can focus only to what, 1m and something, 300/2.8 has closest focus even further away so... ;) And I would say wide angle lens is not really standard lense for paparazzis :D

I have to do a paparazzi style shoot. A work party....red carpet and all. What type of set up should I have? I have a 350D and the 17-50 f/2.8 Tamron lens, a 430ex flash. Would there be anything else I'd need?

thanks.
