Hello!

I am relatively new into the field of photography. I recently purchased a Digital Rebel XT, a Sigma 24-70 2.8 and a Sigma 70-200 2.8.

I am completely comfortable now with the camera and the lenses in all the creative zones. I am just SO confused about flash.

How do you do a fill flash? When do you do it? Why? Where do you meter? Do you have to change settings? What about if you are using Av? M? Tv?

All I have at the moment is the built-in flash but hope to save up for an on-camera one.

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just extremely overwhelmed!

Any tips/advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Bryan

I'm still trying to figure flash myself, but I highly recommend reading the sticky in the flash forum, especially flash 101 by CurtisN.

The sticky is good reading. In Tv and Av fill flash is automatic. The camera will expose for ambient light and the flash will expose for the main subject. In P mode, fill flash engages above 13 Ev.

Here's the link you really should read:

Thanks for the help guys. I am still VERY confused with flash!

I just bought the canon 430ex. Here is my question.

I am doing some league photos on Wednesday night at 6:00pm, so the light will be casting some shadows. I want to use a fill flash.

Shoudl I use Av (set to 2.8 for individual photos) and then just set FEC on the camera to -1, or, how would I go about this? Do I need to change any settings? What WB mode should I use?

I'm so confused! Why am I so confused?

Set set you FEC to -1 or -1 1/3, it's not difficult. Try it out and see. Leave white ballance on auto.

Man thats some serious savings scheme you've got going there :D :D

Nice though, I just wish I could find a way of convincing the wife that I REALLY need a 430ex NOW
