Lens Sufficiency with this DIY Ring Light

Check out the very last picture with the use of the ring light. Do you think the 17-40 f/4.0L is capable of such shots with this ring light? The DOF doesn't look insanely shallow. The reason I ask is that I don't want to dump more money into something like a 50 f/1.8 II.

Call my stingy..or broke :(

Note: I can't go out and try it since..well I don't exactly have the 17-40 in hand as of yet...

Yes it is. Think primes are better than zooms for portrait work, but to each their own. IMHO, you would be better off eating ramen longer and saving for the 50 1.4 than getting the 1.8.

now here's a question that's probably been beaten to absolute death but I'm tired of searching so...

how's the 50 f/1.8 sharpness compared to the 17-40?

Look at the reflection in the eyes... makes the guy look like an alien. I don't have much experiance but IMO and from what I've read here, that ring light looks like a waste of time and materials.
