has anyone ever broke the hotshoe off the flash...that is my biggest worry...such a big flash and held on by that little piece of plastic...is the canon base metal.

I haven't heard of that being a problem. I'm pretty sure all the mainstream strobes, including the Canon's, have a plastic shoe.

Its pretty much on there, I doubt if you could break it off easily, if you were to mount the flash & then hit it with some force you will break the thing off, but I think thats the case with any of them, some people will always end up breaking stuff, if your careful then its fine, its actually built quite good, like the Sigma lenses, my 17-70 is built like a tank compared to a similar priced Canon lens.

Quick question.

I don't plan on taking pics of big groups, may do a few jobs at a night club or a bar where I would need the AF assistant on the flash since it'll be dark, I don't see shooting more than four people at a time. Should I stick with the 430 or just get the 550? Im shooting with a Mark II....Using the 550 as a slave in my home studio would be nice as well....One worry is the 6 sec recharge delay...Its quicker on the 430 went I like..In my situation what do you guys recommend???
