Well, I'm on my way to Montreal on Wednesday, and then onto Toronto next Wednesday. As I always do, I'm going to travel with my camera.

Normally, I'd take everything I have. I've got a roomy rolling backpack that holds everything I have, but I'm beginning to wonder if I should bother with everything and just go with the bare essentials. I'm thinking about taking just the body (w/grip) and the Sigma 17-70mm, a desktop tripod, and the remote.

I'm going to call Continental today and, if they say the rolling backpack won't be a problem, should I bring the everything or just the gear listed above? I really don't want any hassles going through the airports, and I sure as Hell don't want to check my gear.

Thoughts?

I haven't traveled with cameras since May, so I can't really offer any advice. I guess, if pressed, I would pack light for now and just take the essentials. Whatever you do, I hope you'll give us a review of how your trip went with your gear.

I think as long as you are not going from the UK to the USA you will be just fine.

Dont think anything has changed if you have flown with the same setup earlier As Jeff says, the UK leg is the only one I would be worried about....

I'm traveling from Heathrow UK to New York in September and off course there are restrictions now to what you take on board with you by plane. Cameras at the moment are not on the list.
So mine will have to go into the hold. Not happy about this at all of course because I would rather have my camera and lens be with me.

The only suggestion I have now come up with it to get a good shock-proof case that's locked, such as the Pelican with TSA locks and insure the cameras and lens apart from my own travel insurance in which it is limited what they pay out. The only other alternative to that I believe is to leave the camera and lens at home, unless anyone else of course has a better suggestion, that would help.

Are you sure, Anthony.
I was under the impression cameras were now allowed but have to be removed from the bag and x-rayed seperately. Likewise laptops. ?!

I guess we'll all have to start insuring our gear. Not a bad idea since it's so expensive.

Cameron, I haven't heard the latest news on the camera and laptop front, the last I heard was that you can take onto the plane yourself a Laptop size bag, I'll have to check it out, but if you can, it sounds encouraging.
Nevertheless I will still insure the equipment, I'll be taking on the plane itself, the 5D, 24-105 L Lens and the 100-104 L lens a bit pricey to loose.

Anthony, this (external link) is from BAA Heathrow today.

A quote from halfway down;
"All laptops and large electrical items (eg large hairdryer) must be removed from the bag and placed in a tray so that such items neither obscure nor are obscured by the bag."

I read that to mean laptops, cameras etc will be allowed.
Certainly worth checking with your carrier and I agree about the insurance.
