A round sensor will, as some of you have indicated already, be expensive. But let's play with it a bit anyway. Expensive doesn't mean impossible remember!

If you had this round sensor, - you could easily blind the areas you didn't want. So you could, with a snap, take panorama, normal or sqare pictures. All of the image could be recorded in the RAW (the blind apply's for the viewfinder as well as tell the RAW what not to show). So you would afterwards be able to get out more data if you want (you redecided, - wanted a normal instead of a panorama anyway, - just like now you shot at a wrong white balance).

Of course, - if you didn't save the extra pixels you could also make it digital zoom with this, - so the less pixels you store the longer your lense seems, - and the faster can you store the image to the card.

Also there are no reason to turn the camera to take portrait pictures, - so the flash will always be on top and not at the side. A nice (although smaller) benefit too!

Really I could see lots of nice possibilities with this, - but I don't really think it will be. Unfortunately.

While a round sensor would be great from a lens perspective, it would be a waste from a Focal Plane Array (Sensor) perspective. Unless it was a 6 or 8" circle. Outside of hexagonal sensors, square sensors allow you to get the most pixels/sensor out of a wafer that they produce the sensors on. Take into account they have to grow the sensors on a 6 or 8" platter. I think most use the 8" (~200mm) platter, but some quick research indicates some are using larger sizes 300mm.
In addition a circular sensor would waste pixels in the center of the wafer where you are likely to get the best yield.

And, all this yield info would not even take into consideration the need to replace all of those petal lens hoods.

And, don't buy a new flip frame flash bracket, after the round sensor makes its debut, those will be all over ebay for $0.59 (or 3 for a $1.00).

But, getting that round mat cutter now might be a good idea; the demand is surely to skyrocket.

Enjoy! Lon

why round? How about a cross shape, with a square

a crudely drawn MS Paint image is attached. You'd have portrait and landscape, and the square, but you wouldn't have the always-wasted edges.

However, I guess tilted rectangles wouldn't work :o

Octagonal is more likely, you could still cut them out of a larger wafer without waste....
