So sorry to read of your loss. I didn't know Bumpus but I do know how fast they become part of the family and worm their way into your heart. It sounds like Bumpus was given a dignified end - and that is good.

With your eulogy and the photo I get a sense for what this member of your family meant to you and I'm sorry for your loss.

May time replace the grief you feel now with joyous memories of your beloved and faithful companion.

Best Regards

Steve

I'm so sorry to hear about Bumpus. I'm sitting here with tears running down my face after reading your touching tribute. I'm sure that she will live on in the hearts of all those people she touched. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

That was beautifully written. The picture surely encapsulates her life too. What a great shot of a handsome pet.

Sorry for ya.

I had a beautiful chocolate lab (I have three dogs currently) that was killed by a car at the ripe old age of 2. His name was Moses B. Brown, named by the breeder because, she said, "He be brown." He's buried in my backyard. We still miss him, and that was five years ago.

I really feel your loss. I know how attached I am to our Doxies and our oldest is 15. We get so attached to our dogs as they really have true hearts. They give us love for no other reason than they love us and even if they do not get it back, they love us.

I know how you feel and have been there myself not long ago. It sure seems as our dogs are harder to handle than alot of our other loses. They are there unconditionally for use and we love them more than most people. Your family here grieves with you. May Bumpus rest in peace.

That was a very nice tribute to Bumpus, and I feel your pain. I've been in the same situation more times than I care to think about. The worst one for me was when I had to have a 16-year old mutt put to sleep. I was torn up inside for a long time after that. I wrote this story (external link) shortly after having it done, and in some way it helped me cope with my grief a little.

Sorry to hear about this.

I didn't know Bumpus was such a star. And what a beautifull dog she was.

So very sorry to hear about your loss. We had to make the same decision for one of ours early this year. Its very hard to know the right time, but if you truly love them, its a decision that has to be made.

I don't what to be moved by more, the passing of such a beautiful and well-loved dog, or the perfect last day that you gave her...

This morning was the first day I had to brave the outside world with only a single dog in tow.

It seems that in my initial post I did not include as thourough a work history as I should have for Bumpus, a true Renaissance dog.

Approx 6 feet from my front door, one of the Valet drivers for "The Hotel Providence" across the street looked at me and asked.. (he'd been tracking Bumpus' condition for a few weeks) In moments three more employess from the Hotel and some registering guests were out on the sidewalk consoling "Roo", (Bumpus' baby sister, younger by about 4 minutes)

So we need to add "Doorman (dog) and Greeter, Hotel Providence" to Bumpus' job description

This delay gave the Organ player for the Church time to catch up, then the Reverend, and his wife, (big hug)

Finally I made it to the parking lot, the attendant too was asking about Bumpus.
(Official Mascot and morale booster of the Intown Parking company)

I managed to make it to work finally with Roo, and we made our trip to the nearest patch of grass. The VMA is in the center of a major two year street renovation project with the Department of Transportation. We walked past the same D.O.T. flagman we've been greeting this Summer, who in turn explained the out come of this past weekend (I noticed him signal the number "ONE" with his index finger and a forlorn expression) to his co-workers and the those working for D'Ambra contruction on the paving project while Roo and I were quietly doing her business out of sight in a lot behind some hedges.

When we made the trek back, the workers and supervisors were all ligned up parelell to our path, yet keeping back about 20 feet to let us pass. (any excuse to stand idyl on the job for D.O.T. I guess :) )

It honestly looked like a mini funerel procession,. with there hard hats held in hand and heads bowed.. :( :( :(

( add Sidewalk Superintendant: VMA Streetscape Project D.O.T. and D'Ambra Construction Company to employmenyt history)

And this is all just in the first few hours of our day...

Thanks for all your kind words and wishes. It helps a lot.

I didnt get teary eyed but my heart is pretty heavy. A true dog lover is one who can sit and read a story and look at a picture of a dog whom one never met, and can feel for the owner and the dog as well.

Bumpus sounds like a very extraordinary pet. I am sorry to hear your loss. I hope Bumpus has a great afterlife.

I'm very sorry for the loss. I'll miss her in a big way.

She passed very peacefully, soaking wet with the salt water, and smelling of the ocean, salt and "damp",.. just as a real dog should smell.

I'm sure she loved this. No doubt.

I'm very sorry to hear about the loss of Bumpus. I can tell that she meant a lot to you, and it appears that she meant a great deal to many others.

May she rest in peace.
