Why did F/5 give me such a deep DOF?

Please enlarge. This is my photograph I took the other month. And I'm puzzled as to why I got such a seemingly deep DOF with such a large aperature.

I'm thinking I may have missed this technical item when learning about aperature and stuff.

So my picture is at F/5, yet even stuff very far away, like the distant houses, look just fine. Why is this? Does this mean I don't need to use tiny aperatures all the time for landscapes?!

Looking for some answers...thx.

Look up hyperfocal distance. Couldn't see all the exif data however based on the stuff that was on the site you shot at f/5 at 18mm. Don't have the calculations for that combination but for 17mm at f/5.6 if you focus at about 9ft. the DoF would be from about 4.5 feet to Infinity.

bannedPermanent ban

wide angles have more inherent DOF than a tele lens.

17mm lens, F5, I guess subject 5 meters from the lens, the dof is very very large.

WOW! I didn't know Hyperfocal was THAT beneficial!! And I also didn't know wide angle lenses had bigger DOFs.

Thanks for the information guys. I have read up on Hyperfocal before, but I didn't understand it at the time, it was confusing. I'll try again.

Thx again! Very excited!!!! WOOO I DON"T NEED TO USE TINY APERATURES FOR LANDSCAPES!! WOOOOO

Seems the focus is a bit past the truck anyway, so most of it generally would be in focus. Had you truly focused only 10/15 feet away, the background surely should have been a bit out of focus.

The truck in the foreground is out of focus. You focused further away, apparently. Distance to subjects plays a huge part in acheiving DoF.

:D SOO glad that you knew it was him and didn't think it was someone else! I've had several people guess otherwise. Goldeneye is my favorite Bond movie (favorite modern one at least), and I'm a huge computer person, so Boris was amazing in that movie, I was obsessed w/ him for a while, the whole hacker and computer deal, pretty neat.

I'll have to change my signature quote...almost forgot lol.
