Hello -

With a change in jobs, I reckon in November or december I'll be able to purchase a 20D and a 100-400 L IS. Two questions, how does this combo compare to the 70-200 f/2.8 L (non-is) and 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters?

Will I still be able to purcahse a 20D new in the fall/next year?

There should be some 20D's available in November/December. The 100-400L is a great lens, it is not the same lens at all as the 70-200. Its a push/pull zoom, it covers twice the focal range, its two F stops slower F/2.8 vs. F/5.6. I love mine, I use it for flowers, birds, wildlife. I use my 70-200 for sports, portaits, weddings. I guess it all depends on what you are looking to do with it

The 100-400L would be great for aviation. As far as teleconverters on the 100-400, I have used the 1.4x with so so success, I wouldn't use the 2x as it gives you F/11 and no autofocusing ability. As a matter of fact, the 1.4x will not allow autofocusing on the 30D either, F/8
