I have just scored a Access All Areas pass for one of the nightclubs here when they have gigs on. The next gig their is Sep 1. I'm pretty excited, It will be my first time photographing bands so I'm pretty pumped!

What could certainly be a big help here is if you would be kind enough to relate how you went about securing it. A lot of people lately seem to want to do concert/gig shooting. A fresh voice on the subject would certainly be welcome!

As if happens to be I was talking to one of the people I have on myspace. He is in one of the local bands here and he organises some of the events I think too...Anyway I said to him How would I go if I want to take photos up close of the bands and stuff, Would I ask the club (21 Arms) He said he can get me an Access All Areas pass if I wanted so I said sure thing.

Chainz,

that's great for you :D

What is your experience so far shooting nightclub gigs with your current gear?
I think that a low light lens might increase your photographic options for such a venue to be able to get some images without flash as well ...

The 75$ 50/1.8 is the cheapest alternative (and generally considered a 'must buy' unless you have the more expensive 50/1.4), but the wider 28/1.8, 28/2.8, 35/2.0, Sigma 30/1.4 or Sigma 20/1.8 might be better suited for the possibly confined space of 'backstage' shots.

Best regards,
Andy

Hi Andy

I haven't shot them before and at the moment dont have money for the lens so have to work with what I have. Thanks for the suggestions by the way.

Ideally, a faster lens is certainly the way to go. I don't shoot bands with anything beyond an f/2.8.

How's the lighting going to be? If you're shooting the 350D, you should be able to get good results throughout the ISO range, which you'll probably need to do with the kit lens. I routinely shoot at an ISO of 800, but don't be afraid to go higher (if your camera will do that). If you do find you end up with excessive noise, you can always clean up the images with Neat Image or something similar.

We'll look forward to seeing some of your shots!
