Satchel Camera Bag?

I am going on holiday on Sunday and I desperately need a camera bag. I had a Crumpler Stunner until a few weeks ago, great bag but too small for me now, so I sold it.

I had on order on a Domke J-803 Digital Satchel which I tried in-store and it was perfect for what I wanted. But I received a letter today explaining that it would take another week for delivery... so I cancelled the order.

Nowhere else sells the bag, so I need something very similar to it. And I need it ASAP.

The camera bag must be a shoulder bag and it must be thin (as in it must be like a record bag, or a satchel). The smaller the better but it has to be big enough to carry 1 20D with Sigma 10-20mm attached, a Rolleiflex 6002 medium format camera with 80mm lens attached and perhaps one very small lens (M42 50mm lens).

Organized somewhat like this - (looking down into the bag) - Rolleiflex in red.

Thanks! :)

Try the Crumpler 6 or 7 million dollar homes. Wouldn't be without the 7,000,000 home

do you have a military surplus store- we call 'em army/navy surplus- I've used military messenger bags and ammo bags for equipment and tactical bags for tripods and stands. often find international military surplus there, as well. my last one was an old czech bag- sturdy, soft and flexible, padded strap, great pockets. Had it for about 15 years. If I could snag it back from my kid I'd be happy. oh-- and also much less pricey than domke, etc.

I have tried the 7 million dollar home and it wasn't quite the right shape for my needs. It was a bit too 'boxy' for me and because of the secret compartment which I'd rather not have, the upper compartment was too shallow for my cameras. If the bag was longer, deeper and thinner it would be great. I haven't had the chance to sample any Crumpler messenger bags yet though, can't find them in any shops.

I don't know of any Army Surplus stores around here, but that sounds like an interesting idea. Ironically I am going to the Czech Republic for my holiday. :)

Thanks for the replies!

If you tried the J-803 in the store, could they not sell you the demo bag or was is gone?

It is the only satchel bay I have owned and I love it, I can carry all my lenses, camera, flash and accessories with the exception that I have to choose either the 70-200 or the 100-400, not both. I would not want to carry more weight than this bag can take.

Are you sure you had a $7M Home? To my knowledge this bag does not have a secret compartment at the bottom... it's simply larger than the other bags in the series (I have a $6M Home myself).

The J-803 that was in the store was horrendously overpriced. The one I had on order was almost £40 cheaper.

The Crumpler bag I tried certainly had a "7 Million Dollar Home" tag on it. Whether that was correct or not, I do not know.

Perhaps if I bought a simple satchel bag and put some padding in it, it could double as a sufficient camera bag. I'm not where I can buy padding though... I know Domke sell insert packs but I'm not sure where I can buy one in such a short space of time.

He just wondering with anyone who knows here. The six mil dollar home is it very wide? im looking for the same style of bag as the postee, but i like the crumplers and wondering if the 6 mil is too big? would the 5million dollar home fit a 70-200 2.8, 5D and flash? or is that more of a 6 mil job?

In my opinion you'd be hardpressed to get that lens into a $6M Home, and certainly not while it's mounted (if you want to close the top, that is) though I bet you could make it work... but there's no way it's going in the $5M. I think you'd be better off looking towards the $7M even, and whatever you do try to find someplace to check them out before ordering.

Thanks Simon. well im thinking of having it off camera and a 50mm on the 5d and 580ex separate. would that work well in the 6mil? i just read some guy could fit a 30dwith 17-85mm attached, 50mm and a 70-200mm f4 in a 5mil so i dont know?

Like I said, I bet you could make it work, but IMHO it would be a bit cramped. It would fit with room to spare in the $7M Home.
