This Viceroy (I think) landed on the Butterfly Bush in front of me.
By the looks of the wings which have big chunks out of both of them, it's led a rough life?

I bet I know how that happened! I was shooting butterflies last weekend when I noticed one of my tiger swallowtails thrashing on the ground. I thought he was just dying until I looked closer. There was a big hornet on his wing, crawling closer to his body and tearing off chunks of wing as he went. Luckily, the butterfly shook him off before he got there. It would have made a great shot I guess, but I was WAY to horrified to think of grabbing the camera!

Beautiful shots and both have super nice bokeh. I prefer the first only because of the additional color in the clowers. Nice!

I bet I know how that happened!

I'd thought it might have been done by a bird, but that makes better sense. I don't think birds would pick on these as they look like Monarchs, which are supposed to taste bad. (Anyone have first hand experience with that?) :D

...and both have super nice bokeh.

The 70-200 have become my favorite nature "Walk around" lens. Some other examples:

A walk by the river.

Detroit Zoo butterfly shots.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Great shot, but it's not a Viceroy, it's a Monarch. They are very similar in appearance.

Here is a Viceroy...

If you saw a man drowning and you could either save him or photograph the event...what lens would you use?

Very nicely exposed. You nailed the DOF. Like the bg on both.

Thanks. The more I use the 70-200 for these shots, the more I like it!
