No if you ever consider a 1D(1.3 crop) or full frame. If there's ever a chance you will buy a body like that in the near future they are a bad buy. Right now i have my Tokina and its only useful on one body, for instance. EF-S is the most exclusive, especially when I had my 10D, even on 1.6 crop i couldn't use it.

even if i upgraded to a FF body i would still keep the 30D as a backup and therefore the EF-S lens will come in handy but i will only buy the 10-22 i wouldnt consider the 18-55 or 17-85 as i think the 17-40 or 50mm 1.4 or 85 1.8 would be better on the FF than either of the EF-S on the 30D if that makes sense (probably not i am tired :P )

Wow, thanks guys for all of your answers. I've still got some thinking to do over which lens to choose now lol.

A friend of mine helped me stay calm and enjoy what I have, not being obsessed about the future (I am not saying you are).

I guess I'm looking ahead a bit and thinking that if they make FF sensor cameras more affordable to the general consumer market, then a lot of people might be wanting to sell their gear and it will be hard to sell mine if I want to. I've certainly taken on board all of the comments here though and I feel more comfortable considering EF-S lenses now. I agree that it would be bizarre for companies like Canon to dump an entire technology that quickly, so I guess if in a few years time if my Rebel self distructs from my snap-happy-snapping, there should be (hopefully) a range of crop cameras still available. It would be lovely to think that photography is like the old days where you can put some decent money in your gear and it will last you a lifetime.... maybe with the speed of technology's progress, this is unrealistic, but it's a nice thought!

EF-S is design only for 1.6x crop camera and I have one. So why not take the EF-S advantage? (size, weight, price). Who knows Canon might have a FF solution for EF-S lens?! (i.e. a FF body which sense EF-S lens and activate the sensor from FF to 1.6x crop, just a wide guess)

Size, weight, price? You ever compare the 17-85mm IS to the 28-135 IS; 17-55mm IS to the 24-70L; or the 10-22mm to the 17-40L? You save very little if any...

I don't regard the question as "smart" or not. The main consideration is whether you are comfortable to a 1.6x crop camera with exclusively designed lenses. There are good EF-S lenses. Canon is expanding this line of lenses and it seems she won't close this line in near future, so the 1.6x system has its own market.

But, comparing to the prices of the comparable EF counterparts, Canon EF-S lenses are overpriced, I think. You can almost buy an EF lens with the same price. Since EF-S cameras are considerably less expensive than full-size ones, the tiny price differences in lenses seem to be unfair to users.

I sold my 10-22 thinking that the 16-35 would replace it. I loved that lens and miss it. I will buy another one soon.

I'm sure this has been asked somewhere else, but I can't seem to find it in a search...

Regarding lenses such as the Canon EF-S range and Tokina, Tamron, Sigma etc equivalents that are made only for cameras with a crop factor such as the 350D and the 20D:
Are they a bad long term investment? It seems that the manufacturers keep producing them, but then have also brought out the full-frame 5D. I have a 350D (aka Rebel XT) and plan some time in the distant future to buy a second camera body. The bottom line is I’m worried about the possibility of not being able to use my full range of lenses on the second camera. My Tokina 12-24 is a digital only lens… so I know I wouldn’t be able to use that one on a full frame body. However, it seems that the “enthusiast” price range of bodies on the market at the moment aren’t full framed anyway. I wish there was a way to know which direction the manufacturers are going to go.

Has anyone else been deliberating over this? What “course of action” are you taking with your purchases?

as a long term investment maybe bad.

but i buy and sell equipment as needed. just remember that with an ef-s you'll lose more on resale.

i expect the 17-55 will be selling for around $800 new in a year or so and even cheaper if its used.

That's not possible because the EF-S lenses also make use of the shorter back focus possible with the smaller mirror of crop cameras. A full-frame camera mirror would strike the rear element of an EF-S lens, regardless of whether it sensed the lens type.

Mark.

Personally, I think they won't design another EF-S lens...they've got macro covered, they've got the most used lengths covered in 17-55 and 17-85 (after crop factor these are standard zooms), and the wide angle at 10-22. The primes are already out there and there is no reason for EF-S telephotos...just strap on the existing range and you're good to go...unless they update these lenses in a few years, there is no reason for Canon to design anymore of them. Third-parties are going to jump over to any niche, it is how they survive.

Beyond that though, I don't think they're a bad buy...though Canon's are overpriced.

I would like to see one more EF-S lens: a ~10mm fish-eye. The 15mm fish-eye loses most of its effect in a crop camera.
