Highly reputable Beach Camera has the (body only) kit(which includes the normal accessories minus the kit lens) for $1,189.00.

The kit lens is not worth that extra price. You are better off investing in a lens like Sigma's 17-70 or Tamron's 17-50.

Just FYI: I've gone through buydig for a lot of my stuff. They are often very competitive (if not the cheapest of the "known" companies) and I've never had a problem with them.

Well, I bit the bullet!

Here's what I purchased. Prices include shipping and everything.

Canon EOS 30D w/18-55 $1249 Beach Camera
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM $1615.40

I know that the consensus is that the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens is not even a good paperweight, but....well...umm...I just wanted another lens.

I'm really excited about my new equipment! I'll more than likely be coming back to this forum for some advice and tips after I do a little practicing. Who knows, I may even post some of my creative work.

Thank you to everyone who pitched in to help me make this big purchase decision! And yes, I very likely will be getting an 85mm F/1.8 in the not too distant future.

This is one great forum! I'm happy to be a new Canon owner!!

Congratulations on your buy. Glad you got better prices and all.

It's not that the 18-55 is a paper weight, but to get the best out of it, you need to shoot at about f/8. Another low priced lens as an alternative would have been the 50 1.8 which runs for about 70-80 (new and shipped). Regardless, you did well. :)
