Hi Everyone

Could I have your comments please.

I have tried 2 copies 100-400mm L on both 20D and 30D bodies - they seem to have a slight movement when locked - in other words - when they are on the camera and you give the lens/body a slight twist you can feel that it has a very slight movement in the mount. All components i.e. lens mount and camera lens flange seem ok and the camera is ok with other L lenses fitted.

Is yours the same?

With all the large lenses I've had, I've had "very little" play with them. I've never had any large lens that had no rotational movement (as in, it was glued on stuck) on the mount. I'm using a 1D if you're wondering.

Mine has what I consider to be a perfectly acceptable engineering tolerance, there is no movement except for the rotational tolerance.

My 70-200 2.8 has just a smidgen of play in it, I'm not at all concerned about it though, just kind of "huh?".

I wonder if they designed then that way for when in the sun? I mean, if they heated up and both the mount on the body and lens expanded a bit...

All big lenses will have some play. Even the small lenses do, but due to their low weight it's hard to notice.
The reason for the play is as dfjames says: engineering tolerance:
To get every EF lens canon ever made to fit every EF compatible body, there has to be some play. If the body/lens connection was designed with zero play, 50% of the lenses would still have play and the other 50% would not reach the "lock-position" . This is theoretical off course but it shows that zero play is not possible for something like this.

My 100-400 has "play" in its mount also. I agree with the above posters though. But I digress.

Yesterday, while using it, my camera locked up twice, if not three times. This has happened before, each time requiring battery removal and reinsertion to reboot/correct.

One time I was using the 1.4tc II.

BTW, here's a shot with that combo:

My 100-400 on 350D has a tiny bit of play in rotation too and as stated above I think that this is not a fault. Besides there would be absolutely no effect on the image quality.

MDJAK, nice pic. (I would try a bit of USM)

As for lockups: have u tried cleaning the contacts?

Little rotation, but nothing to worry about.

Agree with the others, a small amount of rotational play but no play whatsoever up and down. HTH! :)

Thanks for your comments guys - puts my mind at rest on this issue.

MDJAK's picture of the bear is great - Tell me MD, was that picture really taken with a 100-400 + 1.4x converter? Did you have to manually focus?

I did not think pictures of this quality were possible with this lens - let alone the combination.

Regards

I just got the 100-400 and have not seen any play that would take the lens out of 90 degrees to the plane of the sensor.
Can't wait to get out and put the lens through it's paces!

Ray, the naked lens is awesome. Still produces very useable images with the TC as long as it isn't too dark. I posted some samples in this thread. The squirrel and the kestrel are at 560mm wide open, I think the heron was stopped down 2/3rds of a stop.

BTW MDJAK shoots with a 1D so will still AF no problem with this combo without resorting to trickery!
