Looking for some feedback from those of you who have used either or both of these lenses for indoor sports. I currently use the 85 1.8 and love it but I am looking for a little wider angle at times. Does the 50 f1.4 focus as fast as the 1.8 or compare to the 85 1.8?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Pete

The 85 1.8 and 100 2 are some of the fastest focusing primes out there(along with being reasonably priced).

The 50 1.4 is still fast, but not as fast. Both lens are good to have in a kit. Both have their uses. It all depends on your working space, though.

No where near as fast as the 85 1.8.
I wouldn't trust mine for moderately fast paced sports on my 20D. I don't know how well it'd do on the 1dIIn.

If it HAS to be 50mm, the only option is the 1.4
The f/1.8 is dog slow and inaccurate.

Also I cuncor strongly with those abpve. The 85mm f/1.8 and 100mm f/2 USMs are far more appropriate.

Thanks for the quick comments, I just may forego the 50 range and look at the 16-35 2.8 for the wide angle stuff.

Thanks
Pete

Well the 50 really isn't too wide on any cropped camera. At best, on your 1D, it has the field of view of 65mm.

You'd want to go with the 20-35mm range to get wider.

The 16-35 would be a great choice.

I have the 85f1.8 and the 50f1.4 and the 85 is far quicker than the 50,but the 50f1.4 is a lot quicker than the 50f1.8:D
