Hello,

I want to do more landscape photography, something new to me. Actually, I want to shoot more wide in general, even in the streets or interiors.

So far the widest lens I have is the 17-85mm, which works well for landscapes close to its wide end. The picture below is one of my first tries in pure landscape, I would like to hear your opinion.

350D
17-85mm
1/250, f 9 (focus on the lake), ISO 100

I will soon consider buying a wide-angle, either Canon 10-22 or Sigma 10-20. The difference in cost counts, but it's not killing me. If any of you has already tried both lenses and can provide with a useful input, I would appreciate.

All best,
T.O.

I have both and although they can provide varied aspects of the same scene, quiet often the Canon 17-40 f/4L is what seems to get the most use. I love the EF-S 10-22mm and will always carry it on my landscape treks (or anywhere else) but sometimes the wide angle approach can be too much in my opinion but when the need warrants the use its an invaluable option to have.

Hope that helps.

As for you photo: it looks pretty good to me. Maybe some minor post processing tweaks to bring out detail is all.

I use my 17-40 L for landscapes it's a very nice lens for that sort of work. The 10-22 is also a nice one lens (it's next on my list)

You have captured a nice shot with the kit you have :)

I posted a thread asking the same question recently and many agreed on the lenses you pointed out.

Also others recommended the 17-40mm L which will be my next purchase, or maybe a bigma or a 1.4xt or a ... 30D

Actually, I don't use the kit lens, I use the EF-S 17-85, which I find OK at the wide end. So 17-40L is not an option for me now. I read the thread about the two other, but it's always good to get the view of someone who has experience with both.

Thank you!
T.O.

I've got the Sigma 10-20 and while I love the lens, it seems a bit limited to me at least. It's 4-5.6 range makes it an indoors+flash lens only and the 10-20 range seems to be a lansdscape+urban focal range only. I'd love a 15-30 f2.8! The 17-40 would be nice, but I don't need USM for landscape and again I'd prefer something faster than f4.
I know, not much help to you though! All I can add is that if you're happy with 17mm being the widest, I'd go for the 17-40l.
