Of the two, the first on is by far the best shot because of the contrasting color. That makes it much more interesting to look at than the second. Personally, I think the shot is fantastic. I really like it.

If I were to do anything, I would rotate it about 1 degree clockwise. I would also think about cropping about half the sky (halfway between the top of the green and the top of the frame.)

Really great catch!

I'm really envious because I've never managed to see an aurora. Southern England is a fair way north of Minneapolis, but we just don't get auroras here. However, amazing phenomenon though it is, I think there's often a danger of a bit of a 'ho hum' factor to photos of aurorae. If I were you I would try to look for a foreground subject that has a bit of interest. As Rad says, your shot #1 is more interesting because of the colour contrast - so I'd try to look for a location where I get a bit more of that.

Thanks for the comments.

Rad,thanks for the suggestions. After taking a few shots I realized they might be quite boring so I layed a flashlight on the groud and pointed it towards the boat.It helped make the shot more interesting .

Stewart, thanks also. I fully get the "ho hum" factor. After I took these I was thinking of heading to a small town 10 miles away to see if I could get a more interesting foreground but they were starting to fade so I stayed put. Thanks again.

Nice pics but defo prefer the first as highlighted in earlier posts.

Would love to be able to head somewhere to see this in person never mind to be able to take some excellent pics to share too.
