at a guess you'd need to frame the shot and take two identical shots one with the bonnet down and the other with it up.

you'd then need to load the one with the bonnet up, add the other image onto a new layer, highlight the bonnet, push it to a new layer and then change the opacity so it becomes see through.

I think first of all you will need to set up a tripod and take two pictures of the car in the same position. One with the bonnet up and one with it down.

Then, in photoshop, all you need to do is place the 'bonnet down' pic above the 'bonnet up' pic in a seperate layer and erase the bonnet in whichever way you wish. I would advise creating a layer mask, then you could easily correct mistakes and adjust the transparency to give it that perspex look.

cant seem to put a layer over the top

Of the Background Layer, or what?

Selecting areas in PS.

EDIT-2:
More on Layer Masks in post #32, below.
4/ The Background layer will accept an adjustment layer through Layer> New Adjustment Layer, but will not accept Layer> Add Layer Mask. But, if you...
A/ 2-click on the "Background" name & change the name to the default "Layer 0" or anything else, the layer will accept a Layer Mask.
B/ Same if you duplicate the Background layer & work with the dupe. Problem is that you've just doubled the file size. Advantage is that you have the original layer to fall back on if you screw up somewhere.
