Scenario: Jack Russell terrier dog show. Lots of people. Lots of opportunities for awesome candids, dog portraits, dog racing, agility. All my friends rely on me taking these photos.

I have:30d
17-40 f/4L
EF 70-200 f/4L
EF 50 f/1.4

Previously I used panasonic FZ5. With 20X zoom I covered every possible situation except having BIG problems with taking dog racing photos under challenging light conditions. So, I got 30d. I love it but find myself struggling and very frustrated during these shows. I just cannot change lense every few minutes to respond fast to what happens around me. If I have 70-200 on I can take photos of people showing their dogs in the confirmation ring but cannot photograph some cute scene just next to me or take wide shot of the whole arena. Wirh 17-40 can just take wide shot and 50 is awesome for portaits, but not for recording something happening far away from me.

Since so much of my life is spend at these shows-I need to reduce my stress level, so, I was just thinking of getting another lense. Which one do you think would fit my specific needs?

Would 24-70 f/2.8L work better as one lense solution for this scenerio?

Would appreciate any other suggestions?

m

Do you need another lens, or another camera body? Many people who shoot fast paced events simply have 2 cameras with 2 different lens mounted. Plus you have a back-up in case something happens to one of them.

The Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is a terrific performing lens, with a fraction of the bulk and weight of the Canon 24-70L and (perhaps even more importantly) costing only about 30% of what you'd pay for the 24-70L!

if you have enough light for the 17-40 the 24-105 might be a better choice because it has greater range.

You need a second body. The 24-70 won't cut it either for the farther parts of the ring or for people/dogs right up close. I work with the 24-70 on the 5D and 70-200 on the 20D or vice versa, depending on how much room there is, when photographing Pekes.
