I recently read that a substance that was thought to be quite rare has been found in larger and larger concentrations inside of electronic devices, digital cameras are no exception.

This substance is known as Obsoletium and has a half life that varies on the concentration, but typically seems to be around 18 months, but decays at an even greater rate when greater concentrations are released into the market place such as the release of a new model.

Obsoletium causes the gradual decay of the quality of the given device until the owner is forced to upgrade to retain the levels of service/quality they once had. This explains the phenomenon where a camera or computer which was perfectly adequate when purchased is no longer capable when faced with newer better models.

Electronics manufacturers refuse to comment on these rumours, but it is believed that they intentionally introduce the substance to their products at time of production.

I noticed myself this morning that my 20D’s image quality dropped another notch in response to the release of the 400D, I assume this will happen again when the 1Ds MK3 is released.

On the other hand another substance has recently been discovered in several high end lenses such as the EF50L f/1.0, the EF200L F/1.8 and EF1200L this substance is called Unobtainium and is extremely rare indeed.

There is actually a highly scientific formula to work out the amount of Unobtainium in a given object:

Unobtainuium = 1/BankBalance

imagine how i feel with my 350D i got a month ago. A month later a muuuch better camera model comes out with a beautiful 2.5" LCD, dust cleaning, slightly faster AF, and 2 more megapixels. And for a very small increase in price, not more than $100-$150. Damn it!

I doubt this, becuase the Nikon seemed to always take bad pics lmao. But with Canon, I will keep my 20D for 3 years maybe, I will see if the quality degrades. I'm not shocked if compnaies did do this.

I heard there's another element on the horizon that is supposed to cure all these element and decay problems: Futurium. Should hit the market Very Soon Now.

Ah yes but we keep hearing about that one but have you actually managed to get hold of any ;) I believe it is in the same family of elements as Unobtainium.

I know how bad that hurts, and my solution is to buy the older model. I bought an older model Canon printer (iP6600D) for $99 when the new one came out. ($180 for new one) The difference? The iP6700D has a faux-brushed aluminum LCD surround and buttons!

I'll happily spend that extra $80 on paper and ink thank you.

The presence of Unobtainium seems to me dependant mostly on the size of the wad in my pocket (or it's absence) !

Count yourself lucky it's only Obsoletium! Administratium is much worse: the Laboratory of the Government Chemist did some tests a few years ago and found that even the minutest quantities - just a single deputy assistant vice neutrino - could delay the release of a camera by up to 2 years. Fortunately, Canon seems to have avoided pollution with this deadly substance!

Sounds like when I bought my Canon 10D. I have very little money and I had saved to buy this one. Exactly 2 months after I bought it the 20D came out. I was soooo upset. And not to mention I did research the 10D for about 3-5 months. Tons of reviews read but never saw a rumor for it. Maybe if I knew of this forum, I might've known.

and thor67... i totally agree... a great photographer behind older technology outweighs a n00b (like me) on newer technology (not so me ;))
