I recently read that a substance that was thought to be quite rare has been found in larger and larger concentrations inside of electronic devices, digital cameras are no exception.
This substance is known as Obsoletium and has a half life that varies on the concentration, but typically seems to be around 18 months, but decays at an even greater rate when greater concentrations are released into the market place such as the release of a new model.
Obsoletium causes the gradual decay of the quality of the given device until the owner is forced to upgrade to retain the levels of service/quality they once had. This explains the phenomenon where a camera or computer which was perfectly adequate when purchased is no longer capable when faced with newer better models.
Electronics manufacturers refuse to comment on these rumours, but it is believed that they intentionally introduce the substance to their products at time of production.
I noticed myself this morning that my 20D’s image quality dropped another notch in response to the release of the 400D, I assume this will happen again when the 1Ds MK3 is released.
On the other hand another substance has recently been discovered in several high end lenses such as the EF50L f/1.0, the EF200L F/1.8 and EF1200L this substance is called Unobtainium and is extremely rare indeed.
