I think some do not understand what most people are saying. I think we all agree the 400 is an upgrade to the 350. If I were buying now it would surely be a 400 for me. If my skills were better and I needed the features of a 30 and I could afford a 30 then I would go for that. The point is that the 400 is just not that much better than the 350 in terms of mp’s and features. Surely not worth $800. Better off to buy an L lens.

In fact, I need a new point and shoot so I am looking at a new 10mp camera with the same digic processor that is in my xt - pretty cool for $300 or so. I can’t wait till they hit the shelves.

first of all I don't use LCD at all... I shoot photos and only check them when I get back home, its an old habit from the times when I used film cameras... long long ago... well not so long ago, I started shooting only 5 years ago :P

Secondly 10mp u say? who cares, I still downsize my photos for the webpublishing and 8mp is farely good for the posters I do... never did photos for huge billboards, so I don't give a **** about 10mp upgrade :P

Thirdly, dust cleaner? heh...not sure who needs that, cleaning twice a month works fine for me... its good thing of course, nice feature, but again not worth upgrading!

Forthly, I'd better go and buy 24-70L than spend money on upgrades... nah...

and last issue is size and same macro feel of the body... cmon canon, amateurs like big bodies too! if I upgrade I'll go with 30D at least...

sandro9mm, from your points. the Rebel XTi is not for you. The 30D or 5D may serve you well if budget is not an issue.

the small size of my Rebel XT is perfect for me. i feel like they made it just for me.

the new rebel xti features that you mentioned that does not matter to you; lcd, dust cleaner, 10mp, body size actually matters to me a lot.

i still use film cameras and shoot black & white with them only but i do check the lcd quite often.

i guess the conclusion from what i've seen is that 90% of rebel xt/350d owners will not be upgrading to the rebel xti/400d which was expected.

If anything I'm upgrading for the larger LCD as a few weeks ago I had a 70-200f4 L lens focusing problem at a body building show. When reviewing images the center was sharp but focus fell off quickly, but I couldn't really tell with the XT's small screen even zoomed in. This set up was so exquisitely reliable in the past that I just thought I was seeing things. Until I got home of course and every shot, 180 shots, had the focus problem. The zoom is at Canon right now.

As mentioned in a previous post of mine I can sell my XT for about $400.00+-, so the XTi will cost me $400.00.

The money I save by not going to the 30D I can buy an new lens or pay my rent!

I just don’t get some of you guys. If you have a bum lens get the lens fixed – don’t go out and blow $800-$1500 clams on a new camera.

After following this thread for quite some time now, I've decided to weigh in on the discussion. I'm sure I am not going to say anything that hasn't already been mentioned but at least I'll feel like I've contributed! ;)

I don't see the 400D as a camera that is directly airmed at 350D owners. I do see it as a camera that is aimed for the person who is ready to make the dslr jump or the 350D owner whose camera is crocked and they need something new without having a big financial fallout. I think from reading all of the posts associated with this thread this notion may have numerical data to back up this claim.

As far as the features for the 400D go, I think we can agree that they are nice upgrades to the 350D. The only upgrade I seriously question is the anti-dust mechanism. I personally see it as a marketing gimick to compete with the other consumer cameras that have this feature. Besides, after the dust is shaken off...where does it go?

Just my opinions...and let it be known that it along with a quarter might get you a cup of coffee! ;)

Cheers,
LeBaron

If I had a bigger LCD to easily see my focus problem I would have changed to a different lens on the spot. But since the XT's LCD is so small I really couldn't be 100% positive there was a problem. This will not happen again as I am getting my lens fixed and getting a camera with a bigger LCD. It's called live and learn.

Don't know why you can't comprehend it!

nah, the update does nothing for me, the mp (resolution numbers not that different) and lcd (i dont usually use it) are sufficient for me. i suspect my next camera purchase will be either the 30D replacement or more likely the 5D replacement (maybe even 2 generations away).

all this means 1 thing, more money on lens!

The thing that I have learned is that there are an awful lot of people who think this size lcd or that size lcd or this model or that model is going to produce good pictures. Well they wont. A good photographer can take great photos with an xt and the kit lens or a point and shoot for that matter. I understand that the equipment has limitations in terms of apertures, iso’s, auto focus calculations, lens sharpness, etc. But again, if you know what you are doing you can compensate for those things by understanding what your equipments limitations are.

I can see pretty clearly on my xt’s lcd and I often use the zoom function to look more closely at the pictures I am taking.

Actually I use the LCD to check for problems before and during a shoot. It's like shooting Polaroid before shooting film in the olden days.

Sounds like you are a young whippersnapper with good eyes...not me I'm neither, well maybe still a whippersnapper...my eyes' need all the help I can get with a nice big LCD to proof my work.

if only 400d had 5fps shooting, then i would consider the jump. at this rate, i'm stuck waiting 6 months-8 months for the replacement of the 20d (30d is not a replacement)

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

The thing I can't work out is should I upgrade my 300D to the 400D or 30D? Messing with my head this one.

What doesn't the 300D do that you need to go forward with? Don't buy the "new" model, buy the "what'll help" model. And if that model's the one you currently have and a bunch more experience, then don't buy anything at this time but use what you already have.

That would be delimma...300D...400D...30D...and you forgot the option of waiting to see what the succeessor to the 30D will be! :)

You have a couple of things that should drive your decision...finances and needs. If your finances can't support the purchase of the 30D then the decision is made. If finances aren't an issue then this is where you'll need to assess what your needs are in a camera.

Good luck with your decision!

LeBaron
