Actually that was the 1st thing I thought I'd do, i.e. wait for the 40D. I actually think this is probably the best option, however I've been selling like mad on ebay recently and have the funds just sitting here...

just curious why you don't think the 30D wasn't the 20D's replacement...more of an update, no new ground breaking stuff?

i think the 400D is gonna play havoc w/ the used market for 20D and 30D owners looking to sell, personally.

Wow, for a 10D user, you will appreciate a 30D, from my experiences in photo journalism and sports.

10D's gone ... traded for the XT. FPS is nice but I rely upon
my surfing knowledge to dictate when I push the shutter.
30D should have had the 10.1 MP's... that was a slap in the face.
Unless I give my XT to my girlfriend the trade up to the XTi will
cost another $300 - $400.

I say in the current market (which is quickly changing), $800 for a brand new 10mp Canon SLR, do it! I just want the extra pixels and the self cleaning feature. Bigger LCD will be nice too.

The thing I can't work out is should I upgrade my 300D to the 400D or 30D? Messing with my head this one.

Do you truly use all the functionality on the 300? If the answer is yes then go for the 30. If the answer is no then go for the 400 as it is just a better 300 and you still need to learn this level of camera. There is a lot to learn just to get all the functionality out of the 300-350-400.

I really think it is not that hard. You will know if you need more because you are being held back by the constraints on your equipment.

Hmmmm....interesting one this....

I don't intend to upgrade my camera in the next 12 months (I am still the weekest link, followed closely by the kit lens I am still using)

From what I have read the 400D has got some usefull improvements (pending some actual images from the thing!) I can imagine that a lot of (probably more cost conscious) 350D users would upgrade to it.

The extra resolution is interesting to me. I have printed some slightly cropped 18-12" images from my 350D recently. The images look fantastic, but if you look closely you can just see the jaggy edges in some places. They look great from normal viewing distances, and it is only looking very closely that I notice this, so no problem, but if I wanted to print them bigger (which I would like to do) I think it may become noticeable. I know I can upconvert the images, but this can cause other problems.

The bigger LCD would be welcome! the 350D LCD is pretty pokey!

I for one am in favour of anything that reduces the need for me to clean my sensor. It does get dusty, and is a pain, and a little bit risky to clean.

The fact that the 400D appears to take the same battery grip as the 350D would ease the upgrade financially.

Like I said, I am not about to upgrade. I am interested in this camera because of how it will effect the market overall. I'd like to go full frame some time, but if the entry level cameras are so capable, it becomes more difficult to justify the more expensive models in my own mind. This in turn may effect what lens I buy to replace my kits lens.

Actually, yes and some more. I've even put the Waisa firmware hack onto it to release more functionality. I think there are two things that are selling the 30D to me currently: Quality and flexibility, (i.e. metering/focus & FPS).

I think what I'll probably do is let the 400D settle for a while and check out the more detailed reviews, then make a decision. If I'm right the decision to go 30D/400D will come down to a "quality" thing.

Why 10? There's no difference between 8 and 10. If you stuffed in two more megapixels, you'd probably have more noise. If you want megapixels, then go for the 5D or 1D. There you have more megapixels but on a bigger sensor. The 30D outperforms the 400D for instance at ISO 800 and 1600.

BTW, it was more than just FPS that separates the two.

i've sold my rebel xt.

i'm getting the rebel xti when it comes out this september. the rebel xti offers me features that can hold me off buying a 30D. the only things that the 30D has over the rebel xti are; a sturdy casing, spot metering, and the dials. To me, those features are just not important yet.

i guess if you're using the 20D or 30D, this camera will not appeal.
if you're using a 350D, financial constraints may prevent you from upgrading. And the feautures are not that important to you.

However, the new rebel xti features over the rebel xt are quite compelling for me to upgrade. My next upgrade is when canon starts using Digic III.

2mp's is what my old Oly 2100 had, I can crop better now with my XT
than I could with the 10D. Going up to 10.1 will allow an even tighter
crop.

The early word from luminous-landscape.com is that they don't see
noise problems. If I switch from 1.6 crop factor to full frame my
350mm lens becomes simply a 350 again. Then I have to crop even
more. AND all of that at the cost of thousands.

For $350 - $400 I can get what I want. Remember I had a metal
body & gave it up for the XT. I have no problem with the functionality
of the XT. If you make money with your camera, great. This is my
hobby & for me the XTi is great news.

Though the 400D is a little more advanced, It's not going to be enough to make me want one. The new features aren't worth the upgrade IMO.

For a person who is just starting, heck yeah.

The only thing that would have made me want to upgrade from my 350D would have been if there was some form of 3 stop IS built into the camera, now that would have been a fantastic thing to have included, no more buying expensive lenses just to get IS, hell my Sigma 17-70 would have become an IS lens!!

I dont think Canon will do this on any camera as long as they are making money from their IS lenses :-(

Nick :-)

The new 400d is a fantastic looking camera - more MP , bigger LCD but best of all, sensor cleaning! and it is priced pretty reasonably. If I was in the market for a new camera, I'd struggle to choose between this and the 30D
but as my 20D is only 9 months old, I'm planning on waiting a while...and if I had a 350D I wouldn't be planning to upgrade too soon either. I prefer not to ride the wave on new products, I'd rather wit until price and quality control issues have settled.

Nick: i don't think canon will put IS in the body. they like it in the lens better. there's an article in Photo Pro magazine explaining how they did it in the lens.

Steve: for your reasons, it's better for you to wait a year. i have a feeling, the 30D will be upgraded this time next year.

Retailers will have the Rebel XTi/400D by mid-September. I'll let you guys know how I find it.
